Urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin and total antioxidant capacity increase after the intake of a grape juice cv. Tempranillo stabilized with HHP

Abstract: Red grapes contain elevated amounts of antioxidant compounds (polyphenols) that may potentially prevent cell aging, cardiovascular disease and oxidation-related disorders. Since functional drinks are presently one of the most dynamic sectors of the market, the present work was aimed at evaluating the possible antioxidant effect of an experimental grape juice in terms of urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6-s) and total antioxidant capacity in young (20 ± 10 yr-old), middle-aged (45 ± 10 yr-old) and elderly (75 ±… Show more

“…Indirect evidence of this is shown by the increase in the urinary metabolites of both molecules obtained in the present work after consuming tryptophan-enriched cereals (Table 2). Other workers have reported similar results (González-Flores et al 2012;Delgado et al 2012). In fact, increasing melatonin or serotonin plasma levels through tryptophan administration is a well-documented phenomenon with positive effects against sleep disturbance (Sánchez et al 2008a;Cubero et al 2005).…”

“…Finally, we determined the relationship between HEL and TAC in urine of individuals with ASD. Because previous clinical studies have found that urinary levels of TAC are affected by diet [26,27], we also assessed dietary nutrient intake and estimated dietary TAP.…”

“…17 Drinking 400 mL per day of a "stabilized" grape juice also elevated the 6-sulphatoximelatonin concentration in urine. 18 Serum melatonin is rapidly hydroxylated to 6-sulphatoximelatonin in the liver, is excreted by the kidneys, and has a half-life of approximately 30 minutes.…”
