Urge-tic associations in children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome

Abstract: Premonitory urges preceding tics are a cardinal feature of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS), a developmental disorder usually starting during middle childhood. However, the temporal relation between urges and tics has only been investigated in adults. In 25 children and adolescents with GTS (8–18 years), we assess urge-tic associations, including inter-individual differences, correlation to clinical measures, and in comparison to a previously reported sample of adult GTS patients. Group-level analyses conf… Show more

“…Modeling premonitory sensory phenomena in children under 10 is challenging due to their limited awareness [37]. The link between urges and immediate tic intensity is weaker in this age group [38]. Moreover, individuals exhibit variable responses to increasing urges, either overexpressing or under‐expressing tics [39], resulting in significant inter‐individual differences in the urge‐tic relationship and temporal lag.…”

“…These high correlations of theirs may derive from similar neural mechanisms; for example, both motor tic and PU production are correlated with right insula (9), cingulate cortex volume (10). PU is related to the production, duration, and inhibitory control of tics (11,12). Fostering awareness and understanding of PU stands as the foundational and pivotal stage in a well-established behavioral intervention for treating TD, Habit Reversal Training (HRT) (13,14), for example.…”

“…Assessing PU objectively holds signi cance in the examination of TD. Methods devised for evaluating PU encompass both neuropsychological paradigms (11) and assessment scales (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20). Neuropsychological paradigms were discouraged in clinical evaluation due to their complexity and high demand for equipment.…”
