Urethral retro‐resistance pressure: A new clinical measure of urethral function

Abstract: The mean URP measurement obtained in this study of asymptomatic women showed significantly higher values when compared to our study in women with SUI. The URP measurements were consistent within the same subject. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant difference in the URP measurement from visit 1 to retest visit. The data suggest that URP shows promise as a physiological urethral pressure measurement.

“…It is defined as the pressure needed to achieve and maintain an open urethra at rest as sterile fluid is infused through the urethra into the bladder. 4 Hypothetically, lower URP values should indicate worsening stress leakage. Slack et al 4 reported lower URP measurements in premenopausal women with stress leakage compared with asymptomatic controls.…”

“…Studies on urethral retroresistance pressure (the pressure required to achieve and maintain an open urethral sphincter) have demonstrated contradictory results regarding surgical outcome [12][13][14][15]. So urodynamics still have a substantial place when evaluating incontinent women prior to surgery [10,16].…”

“…30 The reliability and reproducibility of the measurement have been demonstrated in asymptomatic women. 31 However, the role of URP in routine urodynamic practice is still unclear. There are no data that look at URP measurement in an unselected population, and the relationship of URP to different urodynamic diagnoses has never been evaluated.…”
