Ureterosciatic hernia with compression of the sciatic nerve

Abstract: Ureterosciatic herniation is a rare cause of ureteral obstruction. Sciatic hernia is a well-defined anatomic defect that is the result of atrophy or abnormal development of piriform muscle. Patients with sciaitic hernias commonly present with symptoms of flank, abdominal, pelvic, lower back or thigh pain. The hernia sack can contain small bowel, ureter, ovary, colon or bladder. Ureterosciatic hernia causing ureteral obstruction should be surgical repaired.

“…In adults, females are more commonly affected [1,4]. Small bowel, omentum, ureter, ovary, fallopian tube, colon, bladder or Meckel's diverticulum may form the contents of the herniated sac [2,5,6]. Various presentations of sciatic hernia could be symptoms of bowel obstruction, ureteric obstruction, pelvic pain, lower back pain or sciatica [2,5,6].…”

“…A surgical review of sciatic hernias described 99 cases occurring between 1900 and 2008 [1]. Sciatic hernias have been described containing various gastrointestinal and genitourinary structures, including small bowel, omentum, Meckel's diverticulum, colon, ovary, fallopian tube, bladder, and ureter [2,3]. As a result of the various structures involved, presentations are widely variable.…”

“…The hernia sac may contain the small intestine, ureter, ovary, colon or bladder. It may even be responsible for a neurological symptomatology by direct compression [4]. A ureter ischiatic hernia causing ureteral obstruction must be repaired surgically.…”
