“…The urbanization has also been documented to exert a significant effect. It may advance the timing of the onset of HWs, and help the HWs become more frequent, more intense, and longer lasting (Luo and Lau 2017;Lin et al 2018). And the urban heat island is also related to the HW magnitude (Herbel et al 2018).…”

“…This test can solve the problem of series auto-correlation that exists in the traditional nonparametric Mann-Kendall (M-K) test (Hamed and Rao 1998). Because both of the MM-K and Sen's slope methods are nonparametric and less sensitive to extreme values, these methods are well suited for estimating the slope of climate extreme metrics and testing their trend significance (Zhang et al 2012;Panda et al 2017;Lin et al 2018). The Wilcoxon rank sum test (Wilcoxon 1945), which is also a nonparametric method, is applied to assess the significance of differences between two sub-periods.…”

“…In this study, we first establish a circular buffer for each station with a specified radius and calculate the built‐up area fraction (BAF, in %) in the corresponding circular area, that is, the proportion of built‐up area to the total area of the circle. A larger BAF in the circular area around a station indicates a higher urbanization level in that area, and vice versa (Liao et al, ; Lin et al, ). Urban expansion rate (in % per decade) is thus estimated as the trend of BAF over the period of 1980–2013, as obtained by simple linear regression of the BAFs in eight available years, to represent the speed of urban land expansion.…”

“…Under global warming, extreme climate events such as drought and heat waves (HWs) tend to become more frequent, stronger, and longer-lived in many parts of the world (Meehl and Tebaldi, 2004;Luo and Lau, 2017;Lin et al, 2018). As one of the most severe natural disasters, drought has profound impacts on crop productivity, infrastructure, industry, and tourism (Mishra and Singh, 2010;Sarker, 2019).…”
