Heat waves (HWs) exert severe impacts on ecosystem, social economy, and human lives. Thus, changes in HWs under a warming climate have triggered extensive interests. In this study, the authors developed a new method to identify the HW events in China by double thresholds and further classified them into four categories (i.e., mild, moderate, severe, and extreme HWs) according to their magnitudes by using the daily maximum temperature data from 701 observation stations. On this basis, the spatiotemporal features of HWs with different severities in China from 1961 to 2015 were investigated. The results show that the high HW frequency mainly appears in Jianghuai, South China and western Northwest China. Moreover, the high frequencies of moderate, severe, and extreme HWs occur from June to August and reach the peak in July, while the mild HW frequency is compared from May to September. Since the 1960s, the frequencies of the mild, moderate, severe, and extreme HWs in China have increased significantly with rates of 7.5, 4.3, 1.4, and 1.8 events per year, respectively. The increases are the greatest in July for the moderate, severe, and extreme HWs while comparable during May to September for the mild HW. Besides, an interdecadal change is found to occur in the late 1990s. Compared with the former period (1961-1996), the occurrence of the extreme HWs during the latter period (1997-2015) has increased most significantly in eastern Northwest China and North China, while the frequency of the mild HWs increases most significantly in Jianghuai and South China.

Urban land expansion is one of the most conspicuous aspects of urbanization and has profound impacts on regional climate change. Most studies, however, focus on its impacts on surface temperature, and possible effects on atmospheric humidity are less known. By examining the humidity changes in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration of China during 1961–2014, we find a prominent urban dry island (UDI) effect in this urban agglomeration, as characterized by reduced humidity and increased vapor pressure deficit in the urban core area. In the past decades, the UDI effect has been significantly intensified by rapid urban land expansion. Urban expansion contributes to around half of the decrease in atmospheric humidity and the increase in vapor pressure deficit in urban areas. These effects are particularly stronger in wet hot summer and relatively weaker in cold dry winter. We suggest that the UDI effect should be considered in future urban planning, landscape design, and climate change assessment and mitigation.

Arid and semi‐arid regions of China (ASRC) are increasingly threatened by drought. Especially when drought and heat extremes coincide, the resultant impact would be even more harmful to human society and the natural environment. This study investigates the spatio‐temporal changes in concurrent drought and heat extremes in ASRC during 1961–2014. Summer heat extremes quantified by hot day (HD), warm night (WN), daytime (DHW), and nighttime heatwave (NHW) are examined. On average, the concurrent nighttime events (concurrent drought‐WN and drought‐NHW) increases by 2.7 times faster than daytime ones (concurrent drought‐HD and drought‐DHW), and they appear more frequently in eastern than western ASRC. We also find that all four types of concurrent events have been significantly increased over the past decades. Compared to daytime (i.e., HD and DHW), the concurrent events at nighttime (i.e., WN and NHW) increased even more rapidly. During the study period, concurrent drought‐DHW (drought‐NHW) climbed up at the rate of 0.03 (0.08) events decade−1 and concurrent drought‐HD (drought‐WN) increased by 0.17 (0.45) days decade−1. Geographically, eastern ASRC exhibited a more pronounced increasing trend than the west. Given the increasing threats of concurrent events, we suggest that more attention should be paid to these compound events in future climate change studies.
