Urban Water Demand for Service and Industrial Use: The Case of Zaragoza

Abstract: Increased efforts to improve urban water management are focused on demand side policies, seeking to affect the behavior of users so that a "reasonable" use of water resources is reached. In this framework the accurate characterization of water demand play a major role in obtaining sufficient knowledge about this behavioral response to changes in price. In this paper we focus on the water demand of the services and industries connected to the public water network. To this end, we carry out an empirical estimati… Show more

“…Some studies use both average and marginal prices to show that there are no important differences in the estimation of demand [e.g., Griffin and Mjelde , ]. Because it is not possible to know exactly what price really determines the water consumption of different users, some authors use the “perceived price,” which includes the possibility that users respond to the average price, the marginal price or a combination of the two [ Nieswiadomy , ; Arbués et al ., ].…”

“…It is therefore necessary to carry out empirical studies to estimate water price elasticity in order to provide evidence for the effectiveness of price system mechanisms. While there is an extensive body of literature related to domestic water demand, very few studies analyze water demand for commercial uses (e.g., tourism water demand), [ Williams and Suh , ; Schneider and Whitlatch , ; Arbués et al ., ; Moeltner and Stoddard , ; Worthington , ].…”

“…The water supply Q su is the variable connecting the urban model with the hydrologic component. Water demand parameters for urban centers are based on the studies by Arbués et al (2004) and Arbués et al (2010).…”

“…We used a general regression model for this study by including climatic variables and water (Greenberg et al, 2015, Webb et al, 2003, urban water demand prediction (Almendarez-Herná ndez et al, Arbué s et al, 2004;Arbues et al, 2010, Lyman, 1992, and energy-food-water interaction modeling (Liu et al, 2017;Ozturk, 2015). The adjustment's significance of minimizing heterogeneity in the traditional Ordinary Least Squares assumptions was confirmed by including the first lagged dependent variable (Lyman, 1992;Ozturk, 2015).…”
