During the Covid-19 pandemic, urban agriculture, which refers to various forms of agricultural production within or surrounding the city, gained more attention from scholars worldwide. Given the multiple benefits associated with urban agriculture, these practices were adopted to address the adverse impacts in various dimensions, such as food security, health, and well-being. Simultaneously, urban agriculture also was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, influencing the practice from both theoretical and practical perspectives, which expanded the scope of research in this field across various disciplines and perspectives. Consequently, it is difficult to track the topic and scope of the current research status as a basis for developing research about urban agriculture in the future. However, a systematic review that consolidates the current state of knowledge to support advanced research had not yet been conducted. Our paper aimed to fill this gap by employing a bibliometric analysis of articles in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) to examine the research landscape of urban agriculture and Covid-19. VOSviewer was the main platform adopted to conduct the bibliometric analysis in order to construct the research landscape based on three scopes, namely, main contributors (authors, sources, organisations, and countries), hot issues, and research themes. The analysis revealed that the WoSCC had indexed a total of 214 articles, with an increasing number of publications from 2020 to 2022. Although studies on urban agriculture and Covid-19 were conducted worldwide, authors and organisations from developed countries, especially the United States, were the primary contributors to article publications. The journal “Sustainability” was the main source of published articles about urban agriculture and Covid-19, receiving the highest number of citations. Research on urban agriculture and Covid-19 was conducted under eight crucial research themes associated with the food sector, benefits for health and well-being, climate change and air quality, marginalised communities, practising the community garden, practising home gardening, lessons learned from the policies and projects, and innovation and technology. Despite research being conducted on urban agriculture and the Covid-19 pandemic within different themes and geographical contexts, the majority of studies primarily focused on the benefits and behaviour change associated with urban agriculture practices to mitigate the negative impact of Covid-19 in terms of the food system and mental health. This finding is consistent with the keywords co-occurrence analysis, which identified “food security/insecurity” and “resilience” as the main hot issues. In addition, most of the other high-frequency keywords also were associated with the food system and well-being. Based on these findings, research on urban agriculture during Covid-19 generally concentrated on the crucial problems associated with Covid-19, especially for the food sector and health, rather than urbanization, which had been the primary focus in earlier times. Finally, we provide recommended ways forward for future studies in this field by offering insights into the current scope of the research landscape on urban agriculture and Covid-19, which had been neglected in previous studies.

Vertical farming in urban environments has emerged as a promising solution to address the challenges of food security while efficiently utilizing limited urban spaces. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the architectural integration of vertical farming systems and their impact on enhancing food security. Urbanization and population growth have led to increased pressure on traditional agriculture, necessitating innovative approaches to meet the rising demand for food. Vertical farming involves cultivating crops in vertically stacked layers or inclined surfaces within controlled environments, such as skyscrapers, warehouses, or specially designed structures. The integration of vertical farming into urban architecture is a multifaceted endeavor that involves considerations of space utilization, energy efficiency, and sustainable practices. Architectural integration plays a pivotal role in the success of vertical farming systems. This review explores various design strategies employed in integrating vertical farms into urban landscapes, including the incorporation of green walls, modular systems, and adaptive reuse of existing structures. The symbiotic relationship between architecture and agriculture is crucial for optimizing resource utilization, ensuring efficient energy distribution, and minimizing environmental impact. Furthermore, the review addresses the implications of architectural choices on the overall efficiency and scalability of vertical farming. It examines the role of technology in creating smart, automated farming systems that can be seamlessly integrated into urban structures. The integration of sensors, artificial intelligence, and robotics enhances precision farming, resulting in higher yields and resource efficiency. A significant focus of the paper is on the implications of vertical farming for food security. By bringing food production closer to urban centers, vertical farming reduces the reliance on long-distance transportation, minimizing carbon footprints and enhancing the resilience of food supply chains. Additionally, the controlled environment of vertical farms mitigates the impact of climate variability on crop yields, contributing to more stable and secure food production. In conclusion, this paper synthesizes the current knowledge on the integration of vertical farming into urban architecture, emphasizing its role in addressing food security challenges. The review underscores the importance of innovative architectural approaches and technological advancements in realizing the full potential of vertical farming for sustainable and secure urban food production.

Rooftop greenhouse-type smart farms are a promising solution to the climate and food crises because they can utilize waste heat and CO2 from buildings for plant growth and supply fresh produce to urban areas at a low price. However, legal and structural constraints make it difficult to expand existing rooftops to accommodate smart farms, and standardized glass greenhouses are often installed as is, which may not be the most efficient or eco-friendly approach. The purpose of this study is to present a plan for integrating eco-friendly technologies between buildings and smart farms. In the study, 214 eco-friendly and smart farm cases were collected, and a database was built from the perspective of the environment and eco-friendly technology for plant growth. Thirty experts from architects, professors, and greenhouse installation companies were evaluated to determine which eco-friendly technologies can be applied to smart farms. From a building integration perspective, eco-friendly technologies applicable to smart farms were derived from a plant growth perspective. Based on the derived eco-friendly elements, it can be used in planning a rooftop greenhouse-type smart farm.
