Currently, cities are the most vulnerable places on the planet to the effects of global change, both anthropogenic and climate-related, and this is not compatible with harmony and well-being regarding the economy, nature, and future generations. Young people have a unique potential to catalyze the transformative sustainable change that the planet needs now, as they are the first generation to grow up with tangible impacts of climate change. We tested a new strategy to empower young people to foster carbon neutrality in cities by engaging them in ecosystem services quantification and technological innovation to increase CO2 sequestration in two Portuguese cities. The species with best performance for carbon sequestration were M. exelsa in Porto and O. europea in Loulé, and for air pollutant removal and hydrological regulation were P. hispanica in Porto and P. pinea in Loulé. Through the innovative advanced summer program SLI, a nature-based learning experience, young people developed two new concepts of technological solutions to accelerate city decarbonization by designing a hedge for air pollution hotspots and a biodevice to be placed at bus stops using autochthonous shrubs and mosses. Initiatives like SLI contribute to a greater awareness among young people about the drivers that brought us to the current climate emergency, motivating them towards more balanced lifestyles and creating innovative nature-based solutions towards a smart and sustainable city.

Urban tree inventory is a great tool for gathering data that can be used by different end users. This study attempted to chart the species diversity in planted areas and measure their tree diameter at breast height to screen them for the carbon storage potential. A total of 2860 trees belonging to 36 species were recorded in the planted vegetation in parks and avenue plantation. The dominant species were Azadirachta indicia (25.5%), Conocarpus erectus (19.2%), Ficus spp. (15.5%), Tabebuia rosea (9.2%), Peitophorum pterocarpum (9.0%) and the remaining represents (21.6%) of the tree identified in this study. It was found that the highest contribution of carbon sequestration (CO 2 equivalent) is dominated by the Ficus spp. (30.3%) with a total of 3399.3 tCO 2 eq, followed by Azadirachta indicia (25.4%) with a total of 2845.2 tCO 2 eq and Conocarpus erectus (20.4%) with a total of 2286 tCO 2 eq. The entire area has the capability to sequester around 11,213.3 tCO 2 eq and on average of 3.9 ± 0.1 tCO 2 eq. In accordance with the findings, it is imperative for the preservation of a sustainable environment to have vegetation that has the capacity to store carbon. The study suggests, there is potential to increase carbon sequestration in urban cities through plantation programs on existing and new land uses and along roads.

Study of CO2 adsorption in selected tree species

According to studies, as the industry increases, population expansion and technology advancements are accompanied by increased air pollution, therefore urban green area, particularly tree planting is critical in many ways, including lowering air pollution, environmental overheating, and noise stress in urban cities. As a result, the study aims that in the finest urban green areas, trees that can absorb CO2 and are physiologically fit can be chosen. To evaluate CO2 absorption rates to that we selected six tree species from the Ulaanbaatar city and unpolluted area of forest; Betula platyphylla, Larix sibirica, Pinus sylvestris, Padus asiatica, Populus laurifolia, and Syringa josikaea. The CO2 absorption of trees were measured using a Qubit System S151 infrared instrument, and statistical analysis using the XACT8 and JMP5 softwares. Determined the solar radiation with the help of a lux-meter named U116. The study findings revealed that at 6 to 10 am., CO2 absorption was high (-28.61 mmol/m2*sec; -56.03 mmol/m2*sec) but when solar radiation were increased (14293.67 W/m2; 260C) at around 1-2pm, the trees’ CO2 absorption was decreasing (-37.01 mmol/m2*sec; -8.88 mmol/ m2*sec;) from 4pm the solar radiation and air temperature were decreasing (3651.67W/ m2; 18.5oC) and CO2 absorption was beginning to increase (-45.22 mmol/m2*sec; -16.61 mmol/m2*sec;) respectively. CO2 absorption of Larix sibirica, Betula platyphylla in the two study sites were significantly different (Prob tlarix=0.0004, Prob tbetula=0.0037) due to environmental conditions, but the CO2 adsorption of Pinus sylvestris in the two study sites were not significantly different.
