Urban thermal micro-mapping using satellite imagery and ground-truth measurements: Kyiv city area case study

Abstract: The aim of this research is to enhance approaches existing for the assessment of cities thermal conditions under climate change impact by using multispectral satellite data for Kyiv city area. This paper describes the method and results of the Earth’s surface temperature (LST) and thermal emissivity calculation. Particularly, the thermal distribution was estimated based on spectral densities according to Planck’s law for “grey bodies” by using the Landsat-8 TIRS and Sentinel-2 MSI satellite imagery. Furthermor… Show more

“…The analysis of time series of remote sensing data of the study area for long-term trends and periodic components mapping was carried out. Multispectral satellite images of the Earth's natural resource satellites Landsat-8/OLI were used, obtained from the open geographic information service Earth Explorer of the US Geological Survey (Lubskyi et al, 2022, Piestova et al, 2019. In the observation period from 2013 to 2019, the data of the processing Level 1T was used to calculate surface temperatures (Young et.…”

“…The choice was made through the focus of heat island intensification, since it is the most profound manifestation of climate changes in cities. Based on thermal maps of Kyiv city, produced by satellite imagery [8], the areas with the highest land surface temperature were defined. These are Obolon district (eastern part) and Darnytsky district (Kharkiv massif and Osokorky massif).…”
