Urban Stormwater Characterization, Control and Treatment

Abstract: A review of literature related to stormwater runoff characterization and its subsequent management and treatment from 2017 was conducted. The 250 articles summarized herein are organized along three central themes: (1) stormwater quality and quantity characteristics, (2) site-scale stormwater management practices, with a focus on low impact development (LID) and green infrastructure (GI), and (3) watershed-scale performance of stormwater controls. Within each section, common research themes and future work are… Show more

“…Notable additions include a multiyear increase in papers on biodiversity in stormwater ponds such that a separate section was created in 2019, fewer papers dedicated solely to ecosystem services in bioretention during the Figure 1. “…However, in developing countries like Ethiopia, numerous problems have made the supply of physical infrastructure and services to continually lag behind the urban population growth rate as cited (Dibaba, 2018). Practices and approaches to mitigate the negative environmental effects of stormwater runoff are numerous in number that include stormwater control measures (SCMs), sustainable urban drainage systems, water sensitive urban design, green infrastructure (GI), and low impact design (LID) some of the design should be implemented to control and minimize the effects of the stormwater runoff (Moore et al, 2018). For developing countries like Ethiopia where structural measures are difficult to be implemented due to financial limitation, non-structural measures such environmental protection and proper watershed management have a paramount role in combating stormwater runoff effects.…”
