Urban sprawl measurement with use of VMT pattern: A longitudinal method in case of Famagusta

Abstract: The sprawl as a result of rapid population growth appears when the city expands unplanned in the form of low-density development. The urban sprawl increase auto-dependency and Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) because sprawl is a single-use and low-density development. Therefore, measuring urban sprawl is vital, since planners get the benefit of this measurement to curb future unplanned developments. The current study aims to measure sprawl with the VMT pattern. Accordingly, the non-traffic method provides a practi… Show more

“…The spatial geometry of development for the Famagusta region is linear and polycentric (Figure 3). Development along the Mediterranean coastline toward Agios Sergios and (Schimek, 1996) because low-density and single-use development also increase automobile dependency (Fuladlu, 2020).…”

“…Following these events and despite the Annan plan’s stipulations, the lack of a regional master plan and weak construction regulations resulted in sprawling development (Fuladlu, 2020; Hoşkara et al, 2009; Önal et al, 1999). Sprawl is observed primarily along the main arteries leading from Famagusta toward Nicosia (capital city) and toward Agios Sergios and Trikomo along the coastline.…”

“…Dominantly the potential of the urban area increases the urban desire for the living of many people. Rapid urban population growth results in urban expansion and urban sprawl (Fuladlu, 2019(Fuladlu, , 2020Fuladlu, Riza, & İlkan, 2018b), and encroachment on limited agricultural and green areas leading to the destruction of green-cover. This destruction, along with population growth, causes environmental effects such as rising Land Surface Temperature (LST), UHI, and air pollution.…”
