GERMANYABSTRACT -Background and Objectives: We sought to obtain data about the prevalence of dementia in rural nursing homes in Germany.Methods: We conducted our data between 2007 and 2009 in the diocese of Passau, Germany. By using a questionnaire we asked all nursing homes in the area to provide information about patients with dementia. We obtained detailed data from three nursing homes by personal visits, telephone calls and mail.Results: Out of 72 nursing homes, 40 provided the requested data. The 40 facilities included in our study house a total of 3,928 residents, 1,892 of whom are diagnosed with dementia (48%). Three nursing homes provided us with more detailed information.Conclusions: We conclude that the prevalence of dementia in nursing homes in Germany is comparable to those rates reported in other countries. As there is a lack of information globally on rural populations affected by dementia, further international research in this area will give important insights into the risk factors, the variables influencing the course of the disease, and the special care needs of this population.

Abstract:The spatial concentration of social disadvantage in rural areas not only poses a risk to social cohesion but also represents a challenge for public policy. This article draws on a multidimensional concept of disadvantage to study spatial aspects of disadvantage in Czech rural areas. Current studies aimed at identifying 'inner peripheries' as areas with an increased risk of social exclusion fail to distinguish between different forms of disadvantage. Their methodological approach blends regions struggling with various problems into one category. Contesting the one-dimensionality of peripheries, this article presents an alternative approach that allows the delimitation of multiple types of peripheral areas based on four separate dimensions of disadvantage. It is possible then to distinguish: peripheries characterised by low qualifi cations, lower living standards, and the absence of a middle class; peripheries with an increased risk of social exclusion; peripheries with poor accessibility; and peripheries facing demographic challenges. Differences in the spatial patterns of the four types of peripheries indicate that different sociospatial processes contribute to the emergence of different types of peripheries and this calls for varied public policy tools and measures.

ÖzYaşam kalitesini yaşanılan çevreden bağımsız olarak düşünmek mümkün değildir. Çünkü yüksek bireysel yaşam kalitesi, çevresel sorunlardan etkilenen kentsel yaşam kalitesinin yüksek olmasını garanti etmemektedir. 1999 yılında İtalya'da ortaya çıkan yavaş kent (Cittaslow) hareketi, küreselleşmenin etkisiyle kentlerin kimlik ve özgünlük yitimine bir karşı çıkış olarak başlamıştır. Hareketin temel amacı, Cittaslow Tüzüğü'nde de belirtildiği üzere, kent sakinlerinin yaşam kalitesini arttırmaktır.Yavaş kentler için Birliğe üye olabilmek ve üyeliğin devamlılığını sağlayabilmek adına uymak zorunda olduğu çeşitli kriterler mevcuttur. Bu kriterlerin yerine getirilmesi için kentte hayata geçirilen proje, etkinlik ve uygulamalar sonucunda kentsel yaşam kalitesinin iyileşmesini beklemek mümkündür. Yavaş bir kentte yaşamak, farklı bir kent planlamasını ve yaşam tarzını gerektirdiği için kuşkusuz yerel halkın yaşam kalitesini de etkileyecektir.Çalışmada "yavaş kent" ve "kentsel yaşam kalitesi" kavramları birbiriyle ilişkili olarak ele alınmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda çalışmanın amacı, kentsel yaşam kalitesi çerçevesinde yavaş kent hareketini değerlendirmek ve kentsel yaşam kalitesi ile yavaş kent hareketini ilişkilendirmede kullanılabilecek argümanları belirlemektir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Cittaslow, Yavaş Kent, Yaşam Kalitesi, kentsel Yaşam Kalitesi. AbstractIt's not possible to think quality of life independtly from the environment that lived in. Because high individual quality of life does not ensure the urban quality of life to be high that affected from environmental problems. Slow City (Cittaslow) Movement that occurs in the year of 1999 in Italy began as a protest against the loss of cities' identitiy and authenticity by the effect of globalization. The main aim of the movement is, as stated in the Cittaslow Charter, to enhance the quality of life of city-dwellers.There are various criterions for Cittaslow cities need to observe in the name of becoming a member of Union and ensuring the continuity of membership. It's possible to anticipate the improvement of urban quality of life in consequence of projects, activites and practices which are implemented in the city to meet these criterions. Since living in a Cittaslow city requires a different urban planning and life style, it also affects the quality of life of local residents undoubtly.In this study, concepts of "slow city (Cittaslow)" and "urban quality of life" are discussed interrelatedly. In this direction the aim of the study is to evaluate the Cittaslow movement within the framework of urban quality of life and to define the arguments that can be used to associate urban quality of life and Cittaslow Movement.Keywords: Cittaslow, Slow City, Quality of Life, Urban Quality of Life.
