Urban Rivers: A Landscape Ecological Perspective

Abstract: Urban rivers are important physical elements and important ecological corridors. They not only play important ecological roles but also supply bases of stability, comfort, and sustainability in urban development. Due to the complex interaction between inner and outer elements of urban river landscapes, it is necessary to use the theory of landscape ecology to analyze the pattern, function, context, fragmentation and temporal change of urban river landscapes with appropriate scale. It will support the managemen… Show more

“…With over 56% of the world population residing in urban areas, urbanized catchment areas are being increasingly threatened by human activities including excessive pollution production and physical modifications (UN‐Habitat, 2022). Urban rivers refer to rivers flowing through urban areas with most or all of the basin surface covered by urban land use and other artificial facilities, encompassing both man‐made and natural channels (Yue, 2012). Most urban rivers experience water quality deterioration, harmful eutrophication, terrestrial infiltration reduction, hydromorphological condition alteration, and relevant carbon biogeochemical cycle changes as a result of intricate watershed human perturbations (Astaraie‐Imani et al., 2012; Williams et al., 2016).…”

“…With the rapid development of urbanization, their ecosystem service functions have been gradually diversified [2,3]. Currently, the aggregated functions of urban rivers include the supply of water [4], shipping [5], landscape [6], the receipt of wastewater [3], irrigation [7], and micro-climate regulation [8]. Urban rivers also serve as spillways for flood discharge in cities with frequent rainstorms [9][10][11][12].…”
