Urban rats as carriers of invasive Salmonella Typhimurium sequence type 313, Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo

Abstract: Background Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS–mainly serotypes Enteritidis and Typhimurium) are major causes of bloodstream infections in children in sub-Saharan Africa, but their reservoir remains unknown. “…This network provides a free blood culture service integrated into patient care. The purpose of this network is to monitor bacteria involved in bloodstream infections and their antibiotic resistance profiles (Falay et al, 2016 , 2022 ). For the indications, sampling, and workup [identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST)] of blood cultures, we refer to the article by Tack et al ( 2021 ).…”

“…For the indications, sampling, and workup [identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST)] of blood cultures, we refer to the article by Tack et al ( 2021 ). As part of the surveillance study, blood culture isolates were shipped to the INRB and ITM for reference testing (confirmation, serotyping, and AST) and stored at −80°C for further analysis (Falay et al, 2016 , 2022 ).…”
