Infiltration of urban stormwater runoff is becoming more common in many areas of the United States and throughout the world. For infiltration to be successful as a stormwater management strategy, however, it is imperative that suitable sites be identified and their lifespan and maintenance requirements be predicted. Infiltrating in unsuitable areas can result in groundwater contamination and associated impairment of beneficial uses. This paper reviews several categories of urban stormwater pollutants and their groundwater contamination potential. Case studies, both from the field and the laboratory, then are presented to summarize information regarding the potential factors affecting pollutant transport through the vadose zone. Finally, two levels of prediction models to assess the susceptibility of groundwater contamination from urban stormwater infiltration are presented.

This field research investigated the water quality performance of a traditional bioretention cell retrofitted with 5% (by mass) water treatment residual (WTR) for enhanced phosphorus removal. Results indicate that WTR incorporation into the bioretention media does not negatively influence the infiltration mechanism of the bioretention system. Total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP), and particulate phosphorus (PP) concentrations in runoff inflow were significantly reduced compared to outflow due to filtration of particulate matter. TP concentrations were significantly reduced by the bioretention cell; before WTR retrofit TP export occurred. Although net removal of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) from incoming runoff was not found, leaching of dissolved phosphorus (DP) was prevented not only from incoming runoff, but also from the media and captured PP. Near constant outflow SRP and DOP concentrations suggest an equilibrium adsorption treatment mechanism. Both event mean concentrations and mass loads were reduced for TSS and all P species. Pollutant mass removals were higher than the event mean concentration removals due to the attenuation of volume by the bioretention media.

Abstract:The performance of stormwater infiltration systems depends significantly on the infiltration/filtration characteristics of filter media. Sand media have been frequently used due to their abundance and acceptable pollutant removal efficiency. Bottom ash media, which was known to have a high sorption capacity, are being considered as alternative and/or complement filter media to enhance the overall treatment efficiency. To verify the applicability of bottom ash as filter media, a series of 1-D column infiltration tests were conducted in this study. The filtration and clogging characteristics of the sand-bottom ash mixtures at different mixing ratios were investigated with limitedly focusing on the Total Suspended Solids (TSS) present in stormwater runoff. As a result, the presence of bottom ash was identified to improve the TSS removal efficiency in spite of having a significant increase in clogging potential. All media configurations were observed to experience the premature clogging and the clogging state for varying and constant head flow conditions, respectively. The noticeable amount of crushed bottom ash particles brought by seepage force could be accountable for the rapid occurrence of clogging phenomena. Overall, a homogeneous sand filter is preferred as long as the lifespan of filter system is the primary concern.
