Urban Mid-Block Bicycle Crossings: The Effects of Red Colored Pavement and Portal Overhead Bicycle Crossing Sign

Abstract: This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of some mid-block bicycle crossing elements by analyzing the drivers’ behavior, when approaching the bicycle crossings in a real road experiments with 18 participants. The eye-tracking instrument has been used to monitor the driver’s visual behavior during the test in an instrumented vehicle with GPS (global positioning system) and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). In particular, the drivers’ gaze was investigated frame by frame while approaching the mid-block… Show more

“…This helps in triggering them to look carefully for entering and exiting bicyclists. Furthermore, it is important to use colored crosswalk pavements at midblock locations to increase drivers’ recognition of these facilities and thus their alertness to potential crossing bicyclists ( 36 ), while speed limits near bicycling areas should be lowered in an attempt to mitigate the impact of collision.…”

“…The Pupil Core video was analyzed frame-by-frame, in order to verify the elements fixed on by each participant. The main categories of analysis are [56,57,58]: Each group has a defined value related to attention, i.e., infrastructure, signs, and users, or inattention, i.e., background and bicycle test. The 5-point calibration method has been used, which allows the rapid detection of the gaze, using pupil-acquisition software.…”

“…For example, a study in Japan found that red coloring in an intersection can slow drivers and increase driver attention ( 10 ); another looking at red skip-striping and solid red markings on a roadway segment found the application of the color to convey a warning or sense of danger to participants in a simulation study ( 11 ). In Italy, a line of red color placed perpendicular to zebra crosswalk markings was found to increase driver fixation, a measure of visibility ( 12 ). In a separate application, a zebra crossing with interspaced parallel red and white stripes was found to increase driver yielding by 20% over just white stripes ( 13 ).…”
