Urban growth sustainability of Islamabad, Pakistan, over the last 3 decades: a perspective based on object-based backdating change detection

Abstract: Urban growth copes with problems in sustainable development. In developing countries, particularly, sustainable development of urban growth copes with severe challenges with respect to sluggish economic and social growth, population boom, environmental deterioration, unemployment, slums and so on. Time series of remote sensing data provide critical support on sustainability assessment. However, the urban spatial extend cannot be accurately extracted from land cover data. Targeting the urban growth and its sust… Show more

“…Pakistan is a country that has faced great climate change and global warming hit (Khan et al, 2016). Out of these odds, the extensive urbanization played as an add-on to impact the overall weather (Liu et al, 2020).…”

“…The artificial light observed by satellites at night provides us with effective alternative measurement for various human activities from local, to regional and global scales in the past few years [25,[30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37]. Compared with other remote sensing observation methods of visible light, near-infrared or radar sensors [38][39][40][41][42][43], artificial night lighting data provides a unique perspective of lighting intensity, closely related to socioeconomic activities and urban development dynamics [44]. Therefore, night light data can be used to detect the spatial dynamics of different populations and socioeconomic activities around the world [45][46][47][48][49].…”

“…The study primarily focuses on the LULC changes that occurred during the selected time intervals from 1976 to 2016. During this time span (1976-2016), these cities witnessed population growth (Appendix A), massive urban sprawl [24] and concomitant LULC transformations [65,66]. The accompanying pressures triggered planned and unplanned modifications in the LULC of these urban centers.…”
