“…Balancing development and environmental preservation in building new capital cities like Nusantara is a complex endeavor. [20] The transformation of land use has significant consequences on the surrounding environment, demanding a focus on sustainable development and environmental protection. The main challenge is harmonizing modern infrastructure development with nature and existing environments.…”
This study investigates the implementation and challenges of environmental law within the Nusantara Capital City development project. The Nusantara Capital City initiative aims to establish a new capital in Indonesia to address issues like overpopulation, developmental imbalances, and environmental problems in Jakar-ta. However, this ambitious project also carries significant environmental conse-quences. The research analyzes Indonesia's environmental laws, regulations, and policies related to the Nusantara Capital City, conducting a thorough literature re-view on the practical application of environmental law in urban development. The findings reveal numerous challenges in effectively implementing environmental law for the Nusantara Capital City. Addressing complex environmental issues, such as ecosystem degradation, resource sustainability, and climate change, pre-sents substantial hurdles. Successful implementation relies on seamless coordina-tion among diverse stakeholders and sectors. Moreover, robust monitoring mechanisms and stringent law enforcement are essential to ensure compliance with en-vironmental regulations in the Nusantara Capital City. To enhance implementation and overcome these challenges, the study offers recommendations. These include expanding public participation in environmental decision-making, improving the capacity and coordination of governmental institutions, and strengthening over-sight and law enforcement mechanisms. This research holds significant im-portance for the Nusantara Capital City's development and environmental man-agement in Indonesia. Its findings and recommendations are expected to contrib-ute significantly to shaping sustainable policies and enhancing environmental pro-tection in the evolving urban landscape.

“…Given that East Kalimantan Province is part of the lunge of the world, the lower achievement of SDGs in climate actions strongly confirmed the concern of many opponents of the plan. East Kalimantan Province has adopted the Green Growth Compact or GCC concept to improve its performance in climate action [23]. GCC is an initiative from the province to build a movement to make East Kalimantan a new green development model for Indonesia and the world by highlighting partnerships between the government, the private sector, and the community.…”

This paper assesses the government's capacity and local people's readiness to address sustainability challenges in developing a new Indonesian capital in East Kalimantan Province. Although the overall national advancement in sustainable development is deemed inadequate, the province chosen for the location of the new capital city exceeds the national average in attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Household surveys indicate limited local knowledge, attitudes, and practices in sustainable development, yet the community's openness to migrants is identified as an advantageous characteristic in facing urbanization. Skepticism is raised regarding the effectiveness of the new capital's development in addressing sustainability concerns, emphasizing the need for government commitment to integrating sustainability measures. Ongoing support is crucial for locals to navigate challenges and capitalize on opportunities arising from the urbanization of their villages, leading to improvements in livelihoods.
“…It will have an effect on the vegetation and land cover in the Nusantara region, causing the forest to shrink and the carbon stock, especially biomass stocks, to decline. Carbon sequestration can be used to preserve the carbon balance at Nusantara and the green city concept of the new capital city of Nusantara [26].…”

“…In some cities, such as Singapore, parks provide not only a place for people to participate in activities with their friends and family but also a place where they can experience being with others [25]. In general, relocation of a capital city is intended to create a green city and serve as a symbol for new sustainable ecologically and environmentally friendly policies, such as Indonesia's goal for its new capital city, which should be the greenest, smartest, and most sustainable capital city in the world [26]. In the 21st century, the fundamental concept of a new capital city will fully adopt new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things, which are designed with modern technology and an eco-friendly concept in mind [27].…”
Jakarta and the entire Jabodetabek Region is since many years and growingly burdened by heavy symptoms of mega-urban overload. Against this background, the Indonesian government in 2019 announced the plan to relocate it to the newly built capital city, Nusantara, in the east of Kalimantan. The objective of this research is to analyze plans for sustainable development in Indonesia's new capital city. This research uses a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with experts and spatial analysis. The results show that the capital city of Nusantara is supported by programs that include the concept of sustainable development. This is demonstrated through plans to develop large green open spaces, environmentally friendly and integrated transportation systems and modes, balanced land use, a green economy and livable and intelligent housing areas. However, it seems that there are still shortcomings in terms of disaster risk mitigation and social aspects. This needs to be followed up with additional programs in the future.
