Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Churches plays a significant role for native species conservation, carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation. The study was conducted to determine woody species diversity and biomass carbon stock of church forests along urbanization continuum in Dangila Woreda, Awi-zone, Ethiopia. After a preliminary survey, the churches were grouped into urban, peri-urban and rural continuums. Then one church was purposively selected from each urbanization continuum based on age gradient for making up a total of nine sample churches. Tree height and DBH data was recorded from a 2m width systematically laid down Gentry transect lines; whereas, seedlings was counted from three plots of 2m×2m size at each transect line. The similarities along urbanization were computed using Sorenson’s similarity index. Further ANOVA were used to test differences among the continuum. Finally, a total of 91 woody species were identified in the church forest. The mean Shannon diversity in urban, peri-urban and rural church forests was 2.38, 2.67 and 2.90 respectively. The general pattern of woody species community structure along urbanization continuum shows an inverted J-shape. The biomass carbon stock along urban, peri-urban and rural continuum was 24.96, 77.38and 46.13 metric tons respectively. Therefore, church forests are playing an indispensable role for woody species conservation, carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation at each urbanization continuum.

This article uses the PRISMA systematic review method to identify the challenges and opportunities of urban planning in Africa, with a focus on climate change. It also highlights financial difficulties, privatization, short political cycles, and institutional limitations as some of the key challenges that need to be addressed. Cultural, religious, and socio-economic influences on awareness of green infrastructure are examined, advocating for the promotion of environmental awareness and education. Climate risks threaten the sustainability of green infrastructure, necessitating resilient planning. Legal gaps hinder urban planning implementation, underscoring the need for appropriate legal frameworks. Coordination between government levels and long-term vision is essential to addressing political and administrative challenges. Overall, the article suggests sustainable, human-centered approaches and effective resource management for balanced urban development in Africa. It also emphasizes a holistic approach and ongoing collaboration for sustainability.

Background: Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular pathogen that causes serious invasive infections in pregnant women, resulting in disseminated fetal infections, abortions, and still-births. Although it causes a greater burden on pregnant women and their infants, the case in Ethiopia is overlooked, and there is a scarcity of data on L. monocytogenes, particularly in the southern parts of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and, antibiotics susceptibility of L. monocytogenes and its associated risk factors among pregnant women attending the Millennium Health Center, Hawassa, Ethiopia. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 203 pregnant women between May 30 and July 30, 2022. Socio-demographic data and 5 ml venous blood samples were collected from pregnant women using structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Bivariate logistic regression was carried out then variables with p<0.25 were further analyzed by multivariate logistic regressions, p-values <0.05 were accepted as statistically significant. Results: The overall prevalence of L. monocytogenes among pregnant women was found to be 11/203 (5.42%; 95% CI=2.88-9.38). L. monocytogenes was resistant to benzyl penicillin (90.91%) and meropenem (81.82%), but susceptible to ampicillin (90.91%). Raw meat (AOR=6.99; 95% CI=1.39-35.14), p=0.018), uncooked vegetables (AOR=6.62; 95% CI=1.04-42.30), p=0.046), unpasteurized milk (AOR=7.56; 95% CI=1.33-42.97), p=0.023) and fever (AOR=14.65; 95% CI=3.15-68.15), p=0.001) were significantly associated with L. monocytogenes infection. Conclusion: L. monocytogenes was resistant to benzyl penicillin, meropenem, erythromycin, and sulfamethoxazole but susceptible to ampicillin. Raw meat, uncooked vegetables, unpasteurized milk, and fever were significantly associated with L. monocytogenes.
