Currently, remarkable gaps of operational, social and environmental efficiency and overall sub-optimization of the logistics and mobility systems exist in urban areas. There is then the need to promote and assess innovative transport solutions and policy-making within SUMPs (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans) to deal with such critical issues in order to improve urban sustainability. The paper focuses on the case study of the Venice Lagoon, where islands—despite representing a relevant feature of urban planning—face a tremendous lack of accessibility, depopulation, social cohesion and they turn out to be poorly connected. By developing an original scenario-building methodological framework and performing data collection activities, the purpose of the paper consists of assessing the feasibility of a mixed passenger and freight transport system —sometimes called cargo hitching. Mixed passenger and freight systems/cargo hitching are considered as an innovative framework based on the integration of freight and passenger urban systems and resources to optimize the existing transport capacity, and thus, urban sustainability. Results show that the overall existing urban transport capacity can accommodate urban freight flows on main connections in the Lagoon. The reduction in spare public transport capacity, as well as in the number (and type) of circulating freight boats show—in various scenarios—the degree of optimization of the resulting urban network configuration and the positive impacts on urban sustainability. This paves the way for the regulatory framework to adopt proposed solutions.

Purpose City logistics is a challenge in many cities. Literature works focus on the analysis of large or local-scale solutions to increase the efficiency of freight transport. However, store deliveries from the perspective of practitioners, particularly retail stores, is still an issue. In this context, a decision framework is proposed to assist logistics managers in defining efficient re-shelving solutions for store deliveries, according to the emplacement characteristics, city administration constraints and social issues. Design/methodology/approach An iterative step-by-step decision framework is developed, which allows taking decisions in a clear and structured way, including the preferences of key stakeholders. Moreover, a "what if" procedure is proposed, aiming to modify some initial conditions of the target store to achieve more efficient solutions. Findings The proposed decision framework is applicable in practice and helps users (mainly logistics managers) to identify solutions for efficient re-shelving in urban settings. Research limitations/implications The decision framework is applied by the logistics manager of two Spanish food retail stores, but it could be used in different logistics sectors and cities/regions, although adapting the decisions taken at each phase. Practical implications Logistics managers have a support tool when addressing re-shelving solutions for store deliveries. Social implications A balance can be found between company interests (minimise costs) and citizens quality of life (less contamination, noise, traffic, etc.). Originality/value This study simultaneously deals with large and local-scale decisions faced by logistics managers in their day-today activity, considering details about the store location, its surroundings and the company it belongs.

The paper presents a new concept architecture of light duty fully electric vehicle for efficient sustainable urban freight transport which allows the movement of two Euro Pallets 800 × 1200 mm (or boxes with similar bottom part). Active suspensions of the vehicle have been designed in order to adapt their stiffness to the payload on board and to modify the chassis height during loading-unloading tasks. In this paper, a preliminary study to optimise safety conditions on goods on board of the vehicle, and on people near the vehicle is presented. In order to guarantee safety conditions for the vehicle's driver and city areas where the vehicle should be moved, design optimisations on the chassis have been developed. These optimisations have been compared using computational analysis. Two alternative solutions have been proposed and one of the presented results has been included on the real vehicle.In industrialised countries, the number of studies and surveys in the field of urban goods movement (UGM) has increased considerably over recent years. Ambrosini and Routhier (2004) compare the objectives, methods and results in this sector and focuses on nine industrialised countries of Europe, America and Asia. Cooperative action seems to bear fruit providing that information and dialogue take place in the long-term with all the operators involved. The development of intelligent transport systems (ITS) and better management of urban facilities may improve these attempts.De Jong et al. (2004) present a review of the literature on freight transport models, focusing on the types of models that have been developed since the 1990s for forecasting, policy simulation and project evaluation at the national and international levels.Dablanc (2007) presents three characteristics of urban goods movements in major European cities: (1) Goods movements are largely indifferent to the internal structure of cities.(2) Urban policies targeted on freight mobility appear to be quite inefficient. (3) The provision of appropriate urban logistic services is slow in emerging despite growing needs. These features have been observed around from 2001 to 2006 through working with large metropolitan transport authorities, as well as with the French national research program on "Goods in Cities" and the "Best Urban Freight Solutions" European network. These observations draw a picture of the urban freight industry, which can appear quite critical.Browne et al. (2010) provide a review of the light goods vehicle (LGV) fleet and its activity, with specific reference to operations in urban areas, and sustainability issues associated with the ever-growing use of LGVs.
