Urban Expansion and Growth Boundaries in an Oasis City in an Arid Region: A Case Study of Jiayuguan City, China

Abstract: China is undergoing rapid urbanization, which has caused undesirable urban sprawl and ecological deterioration. Urban growth boundaries (UGBs) are an effective measure to restrict the irrational urban sprawl and protect the green space. However, the delimiting method and control measures of the UGBs is at the exploratory stage in China. In this paper, a cellular automata model based on multi-criteria evaluation (MCE-CA) was proposed to delimit the UGBs. The MCE-CA model considers influencing factors related to… Show more

“…Directing the land development is usually done by institutionalizing the urban growth boundary (UGB) / urban containment boundary (UCB). The UGB/UCB is the spatial planning instrument in the form of overlay zoning that regulates how far an urban area is allowed to develop physically, accompanied by the incentive and disincentive instruments within (Fertner et al, 2016;Ren et al, 2020;Zheng et al, 2017). The second solution is to protect the village areas, especially the productive agricultural lands.…”

“…It is here that the Ming Great Wall ends against the gorge of the Beida River and the low range of the Black Mountains, and also where it intersects with the ancient 'Silk Road' from Central Asia: Jiayuguan controls access along the Hexi Corridor north of the Qilian Mountains, the main overland route from China towards the west. A city of around 250,000 people has grown rapidly since 1958 (Ren et al 2020), dependent initially on steel and mineral extraction. Over the last decade changing economic prospects and the environmental degradation associated with these traditional industries have led to increasing diversification.…”
