Urban Expansion and Farmland Loss in Beijing during 1980–2015

Abstract: The analysis of urban land expansion and farmland loss is essential to adequately understand the land use change in a rapidly urbanizing China. We found that both urban expansion and farmland loss in Beijing experienced high- and low-speed stages and their spatial patterns were consistent during the past 35 years as most of the newly expanded urban land was converted from farmland. The area of farmland loss by urban expansion in Beijing is 12.6 km2/year, 39.86 km2/year, 23.38 km2/year, and 41.11 km2/year durin… Show more

“…This, together with the construction and improvement of urban storm drainage systems, can contribute to the integrated and sustainable management of water and a reduction in flood risk in Ningbo city. Improvements in construction land use efficiency should be highlighted in spatial regulations for promoting the sustainable use of construction land, with a concern for strict agricultural land protection policies that provide less space for construction land expansion [77].…”

“…As a rule, urban expansion is associated with a loss or change in the intensity of use of agricultural lands [3,[8][9][10][11][12]. Therefore, the assessment of changes occurring in the PUA is mainly carried out through studies of changes in land use and land cover (LULC) [13].…”

“…Beyond the provisioning value and services of farmland, such as with food and fiber, sustainably managed farmland provides several other invaluable ecosystem services, such as pollinator and wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, water regulation, as well as amenity value (Power, 2010). However, the capacity of farmland and agricultural industries to provide these services beneficial to collective wellbeing depends on the availability and quality of farmland available (Barral et al, 2015;Hu et al, 2018;Benton et al, 2021).…”
