Urban Expansion and Agricultural Land Loss in China: A Multiscale Perspective

Abstract: China's rapid urbanization has contributed to a massive agricultural land loss that could threaten its food security. Timely and accurate mapping of urban expansion and urbanization-related agricultural land loss can provide viable measures to be taken for urban planning and agricultural land protection. In this study, urban expansion in China from 2001 to 2013 was mapped using the nighttime stable light (NSL), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and water body data. Urbanization-related agricultura… Show more

“…As mentioned above, in 2014, the level of urbanization in China was about 55%. According to Shi et al (2016) [31], China is now in the accelerating stage of urbanization, and when the proportion of urban population accounts for about seventy percent of the total population, the growth trend of urban population will be slowed or even stagnated; then, the demand for urban land will also be stable. Therefore, when the level of urbanization tends to be stable, the current land finance model based on the expansion of urban land in China will also be difficult to continue.…”

“…With the unprecedented rate of metropolitan growth, there is an increasing demands and competitions for the limited available land, which requires government agencies to devise effective and sustainable plans of land use. Besides, the metropolitan growth can lead to several ongoing and emerging challenges, such as environmental pollution [9], agricultural land loss [10], biodiversity degradation [11,12], and lack of infrastructure [13]. How to tackle these problems also needs the knowledge of growth patterns for a better planning and policy making on sustainable development.…”

“…As one aspect of urbanization, land use change, especially urban land expansion was proven to cause cropland loss (r=−0.97, p<0.01 in the Bohai MUR, figures 2 and 7) (Shi et al 2016, Ju et al 2018. Similarly, rapid urban area expansion has led to the loss of some highly productive croplands worldwide, especially in MURs in Asia and Africa (Bren d'Amour et al 2017).…”
