“…To complement and extend existing quantitative analyses, this paper utilizes a primarily qualitative, participant observation approach, applying Ewing and Handy's [34] conceptual framework for assessing elements of the meso-and micro-scale (i.e., "streetscape level") built environment expected to impact walking behavior. Rather than attempt to quantify each potential design element, a process that is limited in capturing the more nuanced, dynamic, and synergistic experience of place, a photographic survey was undertaken similar to Costa and Lopes' [39] analysis of design features and creative dynamics in Lisbon, Barcelona, and São Paulo. Characteristics of both the physical environment and the behavior of pedestrians were closely observed and recorded such that a detailed comparison could be made between sites.…”

“…Grodach et al (2014), who base their study on data from almost 14,000 U.S. metropolitan zip code areas, found some signs of attraction of art industries to density and older housing, but conclude that it 'locally requires different attributes' (p 2838). These ambiguous results may be explained by other qualitative studies which has argued that there is more than one visual model for creative districts (e.g., Boontharm, 2015;Brown, 2015;Costa & Lopes, 2015;Smit, 2011). According to Wood and Dovey (2015), the complicated assemblages they unravel are not totalities that can be successfully reproduced in planning policies (cf.…”

“…In agreement with this theory, both Spencer (2015) and Bereitschaft (2018a) observed that creative/cultural firms were more likely to be found in dense urban environments, while science/technology firms exhibited a preference for the suburbs. Other studies have examined the clustering of 'creative' industry firms, noting in detail the role the built environment plays in facilitating interactions both within and across industries (Costa & Lopes, 2015;Durmaz, 2015;Rantisi & Leslie, 2010;Martins, 2015).…”
