Uptake of PrEP and condom and sexual risk behavior among MSM during the ANRS IPERGAY trial

Abstract: The double-blind phase of the randomized ANRS IPERGAY trial, evaluating sexual activity-based oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), was conducted among high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM). Results showed an 86% (95% CI: 40–98) relative reduction in HIV incidence among participants with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate–emtricitabine vs. placebo. The present pooled analysis aimed to analyze (i) participants’ adherence to the prescribed treatment and/or condom use during sexual intercourse and (ii) sexual … Show more

“…For each efficacy, 0, 10, and 20% risk compensation (additional percentage of risky sex acts in the treated arm compared to the untreated/placebo arm) were assessed. The number of risky sex act per month and individual N was set to 1.19, based on a reported value of seven risky acts and assuming a prevalence of ≈17% in MSM . For all cases, the clinical trial estimated efficacy ω T is lower than the PrEP efficacy per challenge ψ and it decreases with increasing follow‐up time.…”

“…Most of the early PrEP clinical trials did not report risk compensation [16, 17, 84], but because participants were usually unaware if they received placebo or active medication, and received enhanced counseling, the generalizability of these findings to real-world settings may be limited.…”

“…technical reports in the grey literature; non‐English peer‐reviewed publications) are not accounted for in our review. Third, because our inclusion criteria required a sample of at least 50% gbMSM under 30 years of age, studies that may have reported relevant findings about online intervention with gbMSM are excluded ; future analyses of these studies will provide important details about the experiences of older generations of gbMSM with online interventions. Nevertheless, these findings provide a key “first step” in informing both potentially effective strategies and a renewed research agenda regarding the development of evidence‐based online interventions to address HIV/STBBIs among young gbMSM.…”
