The present study manufactured and utilized the chitosan-coated fumed silica composite (CS@silica) for simultaneous adsorption of rare earth elements (REEs) of Ce(III), La(III), and Nd(III) cations in an aqueous solution. The CS@silica composite underwent characterization using a CHNOS analyzer, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analyzer, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) spectrophotometer, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyzer. The findings indicated that the CS@silica composite exhibited a lack of pores and possessed a specific surface area of 1.27 m 2 /g. Additionally, it was observed that the composite contained a significant amount of oxygen and nitrogen atoms, which serve as the active sites for the adsorption of REEs. The maximum adsorption capacities of Ce(III), La(III), and Nd(III) cations were determined under optimal experimental conditions. These parameters included a pH of 4, an adsorbent dose of 0.01 g, and an equilibrium duration of 20 min. The maximum adsorption capacities for Ce(III), La(III), and Nd(III) cations were found to be 341, 241, and 299 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The desorption percentage of REEs-loaded CS@silica composite was significantly low when exposed to deionized water and hydrochloric acid (0.01 and 0.02 M). This suggests that there is a chemical interaction between the REEs and the active site on the surface of the composite. The predominant adsorption process proposed was complexation, with ion exchange and electrostatic contact playing a minor role. The CS@silica composite is highly promising for the recovery of REEs because of its rapid adsorption and high adsorption capacities.

Rare earth elements play a pivotal role in modern technologies, thereby driving an escalating demand for their procurement. To effectively extract these elements from aqueous solutions, it is imperative to explore innovative sorbent materials. In this context, a hydrogel sorbent material was developed by employing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and shungite—an economical, naturally occurring, easily processable, and sustainable material. This was achieved through the freezing–thawing method, employing sodium borate as a crosslinking agent. The physicochemical characteristics of the hydrogels were determined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, Zetasizer analysis, and elemental analysis. The shungite‐incorporated PVA hydrogels displayed notable characteristics, including a substantial swelling capacity of 61% and a specific surface area of 32.8 m2/g. Most significantly, these hydrogels exhibited a remarkable affinity for La3+ ions, with an uptake ratio of 134 mg/g. This was followed by Nd3+, Dy3+, and Er3+ ions, which displayed uptake ratios of 79, 74, and 73 mg/g, respectively.

The exceptional photoelectromagnetic characteristics of rare-earth elements contribute significantly to their indispensable position in the high-tech industry. The exponential expansion of the demand for high-purity rare earth and related compounds can be attributed to the swift advancement of contemporary technology. Nevertheless, rare-earth elements are finite and limited resources, and their excessive mining unavoidably results in resource depletion and environmental degradation. Hence, it is crucial to establish a highly effective approach for the extraction and reclamation of rare-earth elements. Adsorption is regarded as a promising technique for the recovery of rare-earth elements owing to its simplicity, environmentally friendly nature, and cost-effectiveness. The efficacy of adsorption is contingent upon the performance characteristics of the adsorbent material. Presently, there is a prevalent utilization of porous adsorbent materials with substantial specific surface areas and plentiful surface functional groups in the realm of selectively separating and recovering rare-earth elements. This paper presents a thorough examination of porous inorganic carbon materials, porous inorganic silicon materials, porous organic polymers, and metal–organic framework materials. The adsorption performance and processes for rare-earth elements are the focal points of discussion about these materials. Furthermore, this work investigates the potential applications of porous materials in the domain of the adsorption of rare-earth elements.
