Uptake and Accumulation of Cadmium by Ophryotrocha diadema (Polychaeta)

Abstract: Cadmium uptake by the deposit-feeding polychaete Ophryotrocha diadema is a non-linear process related to exposure time and metal concentration in the ambient seawater (20°C; 31 OjmS). Maximum body loads of 1700ppm Cd were found in adult worms (up to 0.1 mg dry weight) after 64-day exposure to 1OOOppb Cd. Distinct saturation of absorption was not reached d u r~n g this time. Accumulation factors decreased exponentially with increasing contamination levels. Accumulation factors were 7900 to 1700, calculated on a… Show more

“…Our results concerning the kinetics of cadmium accumulation are similar to those of other authors (STENNER & NICKLESS 1974, ZAROOGIAN & CHEER 1976, GILLESPIE et al 1977, RAY et al 1980, KLOCKNER 1980, BORCHARDT 1983. A nearly linear increase in cadmium over long periods of time at low level exposure (3.3 pg Cd dm-3) have been found.…”

“…The concentration of Cd was found to increase proportionally with exposure concentration and time in Nereis diversicolo,14, Nereis virens 1l9 , and Nereis japonica 135 • Similar uptake behavior, i.e., dependence on exposure concentration, has been reported in Ophryotrocha diadema 77 and Glycera dibranchiata 124.…”

“…In view of these results, precontaminated tanks were used for the cadmium accumulation experiments (Hennig and Greenwood, 1981) ... Kleckner, 1979Eisler, 1971Canterford et al, 1978Jackim et al,, 1970Cuthbert, 1975Cuthbert, et al, 1976a (Fig. 3) shows a peak at that point.…”
