Lower Jurassic ammonites were collected from deep-water limestones of the Tannscharten section, southwest of Reichraming (Northern Calcareous Alps, Upper Austria). The outcrop provides a rich Upper Sinemurian (Lower Jurassic) ammonite fauna of the Allgäu Formation. The area is situated in the westernmost part of the Schneeberg Syncline in the north of the Reichraming Nappe (High Bajuvaric Unit). The ammonite fauna consists of seven different genera, each apparently represented by 1-2 species. Echioceratids are the most frequent components (Echioceras, Leptechioceras, Paltechioceras), followed by the phylloceratids (Juraphyllites, Partschiceras) and oxynoticeratids (Gleviceras, Paroxynoticeras). Juraphyllites libertus, Partschiceras striatocostatum, Gleviceras paniceum, Echioceras quenstedti, Echioceras raricostatoides, Paltechioceras boehmi, Leptechioceras meigeni, Leptechioceras macdonnelli and Paltechioceras oosteri are new for the Schneeberg Syncline and allow for the first time a detailed biostratigraphy of the Echioceras raricostatum zone. The assemblage is correlated with other faunae from Austria, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Switzerland and Romania. The cephalopod fauna consists of a mix of elements from the Northwest European Province and the Mediterranean Province. The detailed biostratigraphy based on ammonites is presented here.

Research focussing on the morphology and morphodynamics of modern river deltas has contributed much to the understanding of reservoir geometry and prediction of hydrocarbon splays and deep geothermal aquifers. The interplay of allogenic and autogenic controls results in complex histories of modern river deltas comprising subsequent regressive and transgressive stages of delta formation. The application to ancient examples is still ambiguous and in particular the detailed morphological description of ancient deltas is often hampered by limited subsurface data. This basin‐scale study employs a data set of 15 cored wells and more than 450 logged wells in combination with lithofacies, biofacies and architectural analysis to reconstruct high‐resolution subsurface facies and sand thickness maps of the Toarcian–Bajocian deltaic system in the North German Basin. The results of this study show the evolution from smaller elongate river‐dominated delta types in the Lower and Upper Toarcian (15 000 to 20 000 km²), and a larger lobate river‐dominated delta in the Upper Aalenian (40 000 km²) to a cuspate mixed river‐dominated and wave‐modified delta in the Upper Bajocian (25 000 km²). River‐dominated deltas are formed of distributary deltaic channel belts and associated sheetsands of the delta plain and distributary‐mouth bar complexes with bar‐finger sand architectures of the delta front. Increasing marine processes in the Bajocian resulted in modification of delta complexes forming a shoreface setting with foreshoals, arc‐like chains of ooid‐bearing barrier shoals and back barrier lagoons. The complex history of the Toarcian–Bajocian deltaic system was mainly controlled by allogenic sea‐level fluctuations that triggered the delta progradation and subordinately by allogenic basin reorganization. Autogenic process change of channel avulsion led to locally reduced sediment flux and culminated in lobe abandonment and transgressive shorelines. Differential compaction of underlying deltaic deposits result in strong differences in accommodation space and contributed greatly to large‐scale delta shifts (>300 km).

Stratigraphy and Biochronostratigraphy of the Lower Pliensbachian (Jurassic) from the Asturian basin (Northern Spain)

A stratigraphic study of the carbonate deposits from the interval between the uppermost Sinemurian and the base of the Upper Pliensbachian is presented herein. For this purpose, four expanded sections of the Asturian Basin, in Northern Spain, were sampled. The sections are located between Rodiles E section (Villaviciosa municipality) and Playa de Vega section (Ribadesella municipality). The ammonites recorded in over 100 successive levels of this sector enabled the substantial improvement of the biochronostratigraphic scale of reference; making it comparable with those defined for other basins of the Iberian Peninsula and other areas of the western Tethys. The lower boundary of the Pliensbachian is indicated by the first appearance of Gemmellaroceras aff. aenigmaticum (Gemmellaro) below the first appearance of the genus Apoderoceras. The upper boundary is defined by the first record of the Protogrammoceras. (Matteiceras) subgenus which in some levels is associated with Amaltheus stokesi (Sowerby). The boundaries between the zones and subzones were able to be established accurately in most cases. The ammonite assemblages are similar to those established for the NW European Province. Some intervals, however, include species typical of the Mediterranean Province. Among these, the Taylori Subchronozone (Gemmellaroceras) and the transition between the Jamesoni Subchronozone and the Valdani Subchronozone (Tropidoceras) can be highlighted. Additionally, taking into consideration the succession between of ammonite genera and species, 27 horizons were identified, 24 of which correspond to the Lower Pliensbachian, and the other 3 to the uppermost Sinemurian and the lowermost part of the Upper Pliensbachian. Moreover, the identification of 3 of the Lower Pliensbachian horizons were based upon the evolution of the Mediterranean Tropidoceras.
