Upper Lip Asymmetry During Smiling: An Analysis Using Three-Dimensional Images

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to use three-dimensional images to determine the presence of upper lip asymmetry at rest and during smiling in a group of individuals with no history of orthodontics or facial cosmetic surgery. Methods:Standardized three-dimensional frontal resting and smiling images of 54 volunteers were analyzed using the 3dMDvultus software (3dMD, Atlanta, GA). Measurements were made from the soft tissue nasion, ipsilateral ala, subnasale, and menton to the right and left commissures of … Show more

“…If there is a drastic difference between the left and right lip corners (extensive asymmetry) this can not only detract from beauty and cause one's face to look unbalanced but it can also affect an interlocutor's subjective experience and emotional massage interpretation ( 48 ). A large body of studies have found that facial symmetry is an important visual cue intimately correlated with attractiveness ( 51 , 52 ) having a significant impact on the social status and quality of life ( 53 ). The purpose of the modulation exercises included in the FIT-SAT is to promote the achievement of a smile with different morphological characteristics maintaining the symmetry of lips excursion.…”

“…According to a 2018 report, the lips are considered to be asymmetric if there is ≥ 2.5 mm difference between the right and left Ch positions. 9 In our study, we excluded patients with > 3-degree occlusal cant or > 2.5-mm lip cant because faces with these features are considered asymmetrical. Our investigation focused only on patients who were considered symmetrical, and all surgical movements were symmetrical.…”

“…Greater than 2.5-mm lip cant was considered to indicate lip asymmetry. 8,9 In total, the study involved 45 patients who had been diagnosed with skeletal class II and III dentofacial deformity and had undergone orthognathic surgical treatment. Each individual had undergone advancement or setback bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomies (BSSO) combined with Le Fort I advancement surgery, either with maxillary impaction or downgrafting.…”

“…When we talk about facial beauty, we cannot fail to highlight how important are the correct proportions for a fluid rhythm and beauty (RICKETTS, 1982). If we add this to a pleasant oral aesthetic, we can see the great impact that good appearance has on someone's quality of life (MATHIS et al, 2018).…”
