Geological relationships preserved in the New Brunswick segment of the Appalachian orogen are key to deciphering the complex tectonic events that occurred during the closing of the Paleozoic Iapetus Ocean. These events can be explained in terms of geodynamic interactions between eight lithotectonic terranes. The first, the Caledonia terrane, comprises Neoproterozoic volcanic arc sequences and comagmatic plutons considered to form part of the microcontinent of Avalonia. The seven other terranes are associated with the microcontinent of Ganderia and consist of (1) Brookville terrane-Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic platformal carbonates and Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian plutonic rocks, (2) New River terrane-Neoproterozoic volcanic arc sequences and comagmatic plutons overlain by a Cambrian Penobscot volcanic arc sequence, In New Brunswick, closure of the Iapetus Ocean is attributed to four major tectonic episodes: (1) the Penobscot orogeny, which accreted the Miramichi, Annidale, and St. Croix terranes to the New River terrane on the trailing edge of Ganderia by closing a Penobscot backarc basin in the Early Ordovician, (2) the Taconic orogeny, which accreted the Popelogan terrane on the leading edge of Ganderia to the Laurentian margin in the Late Ordovician and effectively closed the main tract of the Iapetus Ocean, (3) the Salinic orogeny, which accreted the Elmtree and Miramichi terranes to the Laurentian margin by closing the Tetagouche backarc basin in the Silurian, and (4) the Acadian orogeny, which accreted the Caledonia terrane (Avalonia) to the Brookville and New River terranes on the trailing edge of Ganderia in the latest Silurian to earliest Devonian and in the process closed the last remaining oceanic tract in the northeastern Appalachians. Late Paleozoic strike-slip faults in Maritime Canada and their role in the reconfiguration of the northern Appalachian orogen

Major late Paleozoic faults, many with documented strike-slip motion, have dissected the Ordovician-Devonian Appalachian orogen in the Maritime Provinces of Atlantic Canada. Activity alternated between east-west faults (Minas trend) and NE-SW faults (Appalachian trend). NW-SE faults (Canso trend) were probably conjugate to Minas-trend faults. Major dextral movement, on faults with Appalachian trend, in total between 200 and 300 km, began in the Late Devonian. This movement initiated the Maritimes Basin in a transtensional environment at a releasing bend formed around a promontory in the Laurentian margin and thinned the crust, accounting for the major subsidence of the basin. Appalachian-trend strike slip continued in the Mississippian but was accompanied by major movement on E-W Minas-trend faults culminating around the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian boundary, juxtaposing the Meguma and Avalon terranes of the Appalachians close to their present-day configuration. However, strike slip continued during the Pennsylvanian-Permian interval resulting in transpressional deformation that reactivated and inverted earlier extensional faults. A final major episode of transtension, mainly sinistral, occurred during the Mesozoic opening of the Atlantic Ocean. Restoration of movements on these faults, amounting to several hundred kilometers of slip, explains anomalies in the present-day distribution of terranes amalgamated during early Paleozoic Appalachian tectonism. In the restored geometry, the Nashoba and Ellsworth terranes of Ganderia are adjacent to one another, and the Meguma terrane lies clearly outboard of Avalonia. A restored post-Acadian paleogeography, not the present-day geometry of the orogen, should be used as a basis for reconstructions of its earlier Paleozoic history.

Upper crustal investigation of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence region, eastern Canada using ambient noise tomography

We studied the 3‐D shear wave velocity (Vs) structure in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL) and adjacent onshore areas to 20 km depth by inverting Rayleigh wave dispersion extracted from the vertical components of continuous ambient seismic noise waveforms. The region is divided into three broad zones based on their Vs characteristics. In the northwest, the Grenville Province (i.e., the exposed edge of predominantly Middle‐Proterozoic Laurentian crust) is dominated by high Vs, except for well‐known anorthosite sites, which are characterized by relatively lower Vs. In contrast, the central segment of the GSL region corresponds to a belt with generally low Vs at upper crustal levels. In the southeastern part of the GSL, prominent low Vs in the uppermost crust are found to coincide with locations of subsidiary basins of the Canadian Maritime Basin, while higher Vs characterize the accreted Appalachian terranes where they are exposed on land. The Grenville Province is wedged out at depth by the Red Indian Line, which is the suture between composite Laurentia and peri‐Godwanan Ganderia in the Canadian Appalachians. The geometry and Vs characteristics of the south‐easternmost peri‐Gondwanan terranes of Avalonia and Meguma suggest that they may be fully or partially structurally overlying a basement with distinct seismic characteristics, which could be a vestige of the West African craton that was underthrust beneath composite Laurentia during the terminal Alleghenian continent‐continent collision. In the middle of the GSL, the 3‐D geometry of the Canadian Maritimes sedimentary basins overlying the Appalachian terranes shows that the depth to the top of basement is in excess of 8 km.
