Upper arm posture during human embryonic and fetal development

Abstract: The upper extremity posture is characteristic of each Carnegie stage (CS), particularly between CS18 and CS23. Morphogenesis of the shoulder joint complex largely contributes to posture, although the exact position of the shoulder joints has not been described. In the present study, the position of the upper arm was first quantitatively measured, and the contribution of the position of the shoulder girdle, including the scapula and glenohumeral (GH) joint, was then evaluated.Twenty-nine human fetal specimens f… Show more

“…We recently presented data on upper-arm posture [ 15 ], as well as the morphogenesis and position of the scapula [ 20 ]. There were similarities in posture between the upper arms and thighs, as described in the present study.…”

“…The 7-T MRI system was used to acquire 3D images of fetal specimens with a CRL of 37.2–103 mm, whereas the 3-T MRI system was utilized to obtain 3D images of fetal samples with a CRL of >116 mm. The conditions for acquisition are described elsewhere [ 15 ].…”

“…The appropriate coil size and data acquisition settings were selected based on the size of the specimens 43 . Conversely, the clinical 7-T MRI system with a single-channel transmit and 28-channel receive knee coil (Quality Electrodynamics, OH, USA) or the 3-T MRI system was used for imaging fetus specimens with a CRL ≥ 88 mm 43 , 44 . During image acquisition, the fetus specimens were embedded in 1% agarose gel to fix their positions and avoid air bubble artifacts.…”

“…According to the size of the samples, appropriate coil size and settings for data acquisition were selected (Table S1). In contrast, the human 7-T MRI system was used with a single-channel transmit, and 28-channel receive knee coil (Quality Electrodynamics, OH, USA) or the 3-T MRI system was applied to fetal imaging in samples with CRL > 90 mm (Table S2) (Kumano et al, 2022). During image acquisition, samples were embedded in 1% agarose gel to fix their position and avoid air bubble artifacts.…”
