Upper Airways Microbiota in Antibiotic-Naïve Wheezing and Healthy Infants from the Tropics of Rural Ecuador

Abstract: BackgroundObservations that the airway microbiome is disturbed in asthma may be confounded by the widespread use of antibiotics and inhaled steroids. We have therefore examined the oropharyngeal microbiome in early onset wheezing infants from a rural area of tropical Ecuador where antibiotic usage is minimal and glucocorticoid usage is absent.Materials and MethodsWe performed pyrosequencing of amplicons of the polymorphic bacterial 16S rRNA gene from oropharyngeal samples from 24 infants with non-infectious ea… Show more

“…We do know that there are differences in the airway microbiome between severe asthmatic patients and controls, 52 but again, whether primary or secondary cannot be determined; however, data from Ecuador shows that treatment-naïve wheezers have a different microbiome from non-wheezy controls. 98 These findings do however underscore that just because a cell is present it does not mean it is the cause of harm, and also drives home the lesson that adult and paediatric STRA may have important dissimilarities.…”

“…Bacteria may be present in amniotic fluid (23) whilst the bacteria in the newborn gut have been shown to be influenced by delivery mode with the microbiota sourced from the mother's vagina during delivery or from skin with caesarean section (24). Accumulation of further organisms continues during infancy and childhood as demonstrated by longitudinal studies of the gut (8) and cross-sectional studies of the respiratory tract (25).…”
