Updating the markers for oocyte quality evaluation: intracellular temperature as a new index

Abstract: BackgroundThe developmental competence of an embryo is principally dictated by the oocyte. Usually, oocyte selection is based on morphological properties; however, all morphological criteria that are currently used for the grading and screening of oocytes are not able to eliminate the subjectivity. Despite recent studies of the molecular factors related to oocyte quality, it is technically difficult to develop an index based on these factors, and new indices that reflect intracellular conditions are necessary.… Show more

“…Mitochondria play a key role in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation for oocyte and embryonic development [ 41 ]. It is well known that mitochondria distribution is a dynamic process, and it is an important indicator of oocyte quality [ 42 ]. For example, a uniform, granulated distribution of active mitochondria in the process of oocyte maturation and also in the early embryo-specific period is essential for the normal embryo development [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…Ovarian reserve is a key determinant of female fecundity and hence a reduction in the number of primordial follicles available in early adulthood is highly likely to be associated with an early decline in fertility (35). Fecundity in later life relates to both oocyte quality and quantity; however, there is, as yet, no well-established method of reliably predicting oocyte quality (36). Hence, there is a reliance on occyte quantity.…”

“…Oocyte competence is fundamental for the formation of a gamete with full embryo and implantation potential. Oocyte competence is acquired during in vivo maturation inside the ovarian follicle, in association with local factors, brain hormones and the surrounding follicular cells, being accomplished in an integrated mode at cytoplasmic and nuclear levels (Keef et al, 2015;Conti and Franciosi, 2018;Hoshino, 2018). Regarding cytoplasmic maturation, the oocyte accumulates RNA molecules, proteins, substrates and nutrients, and calcium signalling stores (Coticchio et al, 2015;Ferrer-Buitrago et al, 2018).…”
