Updates on the coronavirus disease 2019 vaccine and consideration in children

Abstract: Humanity has been suffering from the global severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic that began late in 2019. In 2020, for the first time in history, new vaccine platforms-including mRNA vaccines and viral vector-based DNA vaccines-have been given emergency use authorization, leading to mass vaccinations. The purpose of this article is to review the currently most widely used coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines, investigate their immunogenicity and efficacy data, and analyze the vaccine safety pr… Show more

“…Various vaccines have been developed based on the mRNA of surface proteins of the virus or killed virus. The vaccines are designed to produce antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 [ 93 ]. Several studies have reported that vaccinees are infected less frequently and the vaccines are effective at limiting the spread of COVID-19 [ 94 ].…”

“…As of 2020, the population under 20 years of age make up 33.3% of the world’s population and 24.8% of the US population. 345 Similar with other special populations children and adolescents, are excluded from vaccine trials. In children and adolescents the course of COVID-19 infections is mostly asymptomatic or mild.…”
