Background: The original Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) Competency Model for Professional Rehabilitation Nursing published in 2016, and updated in 2020, provides a framework for rehabilitation nursing practice. Aim: This companion, but stand-alone, article to a 2022 publication further explicates and informs the updated Competency Model from inside looking out toward an increasing application for evidence-based practice (EBP). Approach: An eight-member 2020 ARN Task Force used an iterative process to review the original four domains and related competencies and came to consensus for the updated model. Outcome: This model provides revised competency role descriptors or behaviors that guide nurses practicing at different proficiency levels in various settings. Clinical Relevance: The Competency Model for Professional Rehabilitation Nursing is a premier resource that can advance professional rehabilitation nursing and guide EBP, including evaluation, quality improvement, and research. The model describes the nurse's role on the intra/interprofessional team and fosters collaboration with other healthcare professionals to enhance the quality of life for those affected by disability and chronic illness. Conclusion:The domains and associated competencies of this model clarify nursing roles at different proficiency levels, and role descriptors reflect current practice, supporting advancement of the specialty practice of rehabilitation nursing well into the 21st century.

A pilot's control behavior has a direct impact on aviation safety. To adapt to new flight training reforms, a competency-based assessment method is proposed in this paper. First, assessment scenarios, key competencies and observable behaviours were determined. Then, observable behavior assessment indexes were developed based on standard operating procedures and practical examination standards. Flight training data were analyzed based on curve similarity theory and a time series fast retrieval algorithm, and the assessment indexes were scored. The competency assessment method was established by quantifying “HOW MANY” and “HOW OFTEN” observable behaviors according to the assessment indexes score results. Finally, the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm was used to classify the assessment values, and assessment results were obtained. A teardrop pattern procedure was used to test the reliability of the assessment method. The results indicate that the correlation coefficient between the model evaluation and the expert evaluation is 0.947 with a significance level of 0.01, reliably and objectively quantifying manual flight performance and improving the scientific nature of manual flight performance assessment methods. Flight training institutions can use this method to establish diverse assessment scenarios and formulate corresponding assessment indexes based on the characteristics of each pilot to reasonably evaluate the manual flight performance of pilot. Targeted training methods can then be adopted for pilot with different performance levels to improve their competency.

It began with a challenge from our Chief Nursing Officer. As a Magnet hospital, it was time for our nurse residency program to be recognized as an accredited program for new graduate nurses. This article shares our experience using the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses competency statements in a creative way when applying for recognition as the first American Nurses Credentialing Center-accredited specialty hospital nurse residency program. Although these competency statements were used initially to meet the requirements of the accreditation application process, they also led to the creation of a document that serves two purposes. First, it can be used to instruct new graduate nurses on the structure and processes of a nurse residency program in which competency statements are used to guide curriculum development. Second, it can be used to inform nurse residency program managers on new graduate nurses’ progress throughout the nurse residency program by tracking competency completion. The end result of this accredited program is a new graduate nurse who understands not only what it means to be a nurse but also what it means to be a rehabilitation specialty nurse.
