The Arxan-Chaihe Volcanic Field, Inner Mongolia, NE China is a Pleistocene to Recent volcanic field still considered to be active. In this chapter we provide an update of current volcanological research conducted in the last four years to describe the volcanic architecture of the identified vents, their eruptive history and potential volcanic hazards. Here we provide an evidence-based summary of the most common volcanic eruption styles and types the field experienced in its evolution. The volcanic field is strongly controlled by older structural elements of the region. Hence most of the volcanoes of the field are fissure-controlled, fissure-aligned and erupted in Hawaiian to Strombolian-style creating lava spatter and scoria cone cone chains. One of the largest and most complex volcano of the field (Tongxin) experienced a violent phreatomagmatic explosive phase creating a maar in an intra-mountain basin, while the youngest known eruptions formed a triple vent set (Yanshan) that reached violent Strombolian phases and created an extensive ash and lapilli plains in the surrounding areas. This complex vent system also emitted voluminous lava flows that change the landscape by damming fluival networks, providing a volcanological paradise for the recently established Arxan UNESCO GLobal Geopark.

A B S T R A C TThe investigation of the Martian surface through remote sensing allowed the identification of mound-like topographically positive features that, based on geomorphological observations, have been ascribed to different phenomena. New observations will be performed in the forthcoming future to look for possible methane sources, hence discriminating morphologically similar features is a key objective to efficiently investigate and target the Martian surface. Here, we performed fractal analysis on five Martian fields of mound-like features that have been interpreted respectively as mud volcanoes, pingos, tumuli, rootless cones and monogenetic volcanic vents successfully validating the major interpretations of these features and in turn, the applicability of the fractal clustering method for discriminating among such features. Indeed, this technique is able to assess if the analyzed features are directly related to underlying systems of connected percolating fracture networks and estimates their extension in the subsurface. Accordingly, volcanic vents and mud volcanoes appeared to be connected to percolating systems involving several kilometers of crust, pingos and tumuli resulted to be unequivocally unrelated to active percolating fractures while rootless cones outputted weak relationship with shallow active fracture systems.

This work presents an overview of the rich geodiversity outcropping in the São Tomé Island, one of the two islands that make up the archipelago of São Tomé and Príncipe, the second smallest state of Africa in area. Located at the equator, in the alignment known as the -Cameroon Volcanic Line‖, this archipelago represents a privileged area for the comparative study between oceanic and continental alkaline volcanism, and therefore between the subcontinental and suboceanic mantle. Ten geosites of São Tomé Island were selected, described and evaluated on the basis of their geoheritage value and using a qualitative system of classification, which integrates both the meaning attributed to the objects by scientific communities and the public understanding of such meanings related to its social use. The selected geosites display different heritage values (documental, scenic, symbolic, iconographic and indicial) potentially usable for different purposes, namely scientific and educational, but mostly tourism. Geotourism can play a key role in the promotion of sustainable development in the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, and the geosites here described are likely to ground a geo-itinerary on this -pearl‖ of the Cameron Line.
