Update on N6‐methyladenosine methylation in obesity‐related diseases

Caiqin Cheng,
Fan Yu,
Guoyue Yuan
et al.

Abstract: Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease that is closely related to type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. The prevalence of obesity is increasing rapidly every year and is recognized as a global public health problem. In recent years, the role of epigenetics in the development of obesity and related diseases has been recognized and is currently a research hotspot. N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) methylation is the most abundant … Show more

“…RNA m6A modifications have unique functions in regulating hepatic processes and diseases, including lipid metabolism and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease [ 53 , 54 ]. Lipid metabolism primarily occurs in the liver, which is responsible for lipoprotein synthesis, absorption, and transport.…”

“…Therefore, further research and development of novel therapeutic tactics are required [13]. In addition, obesity is a chronic metabolic disease that is closely related to type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and osteoarthritis [14]. The prevalence of obesity is increasing rapidly, which is considered to be a global public health burden [14].…”

“…In addition, obesity is a chronic metabolic disease that is closely related to type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and osteoarthritis [14]. The prevalence of obesity is increasing rapidly, which is considered to be a global public health burden [14]. However, the precise mechanism and role of m6A-modified ncRNAs in MAFLD are not well understood.…”

“…N6-methyladenosine (M6A), a form of methylation occurring at the sixth N atom of the adenine base (A) of an RNA molecule, is currently considered to be the most abundant and conserved internal RNA modification. RNA M6A modification plays an essential role in RNA splicing, stability, output, degradation, and other metabolic processes [ 2 ], which affects almost all biological processes, such as cell autophagy [ 3 ], cell differentiation [ 4 ], inflammatory response [ 5 ], immune response [ 6 ], metabolic disease [ 7 ], carcinogenesis [ 8 ], and cancer prognosis [ 9 ].…”
