Update on PET Radiopharmaceuticals for Imaging Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract: Numerous positron emission tomography (PET) targets for detection and staging of hepatocellular cancer have been developed in recent years. Hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) are clinically and pathologically heterogeneous tumours with a high tendency to be aggressive and unresponsive to chemotherapy. Early detection is essential, and the need for an adequate imaging biomarker, which can overcome some of the limitations of conventional radiological imaging, is persistent. Flourine-18 (18F) flourodeoxyglucose (FD… Show more

“…Yang et al explored the biological behavior of HCC with PVTT and used tumor biomarkers such as alphafetoprotein (AFP) and SUV max to identify patients who may be suitable for liver transplants [6]. They found elevated AFP levels often corresponded with more aggressive HCC cases [6,39]. Advanced tumor stages, PVTT, and large and multiple tumors were also associated with positive 18F-FDG PET/CT results [40].…”

“…A few radiotracers that perform better than 18 F-FDG have been documented in hepatocellular carcinoma. Of these, acetate, a precursor of phosphatidylcholine, exhibits high sensitivity, especially for well-differentiated tumors [12]. 11 C-acetate and 18 F-FDG have complementary roles in the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma.…”
