“…Patel, Chen, and Kavdia ()) reported that SOD2 expression is transient, according to our H 2 O 2 treatment in HUVECs, decreasing after 72 hr compared to other antioxidative enzymes. Regarding catalase, similar effects have been observed in another study with HUVECs, showing its level decreases after H 2 O 2 treatment and increase after a phenolic‐rich extract treatment (Soares et al, ).…”

“…When catalase activity was analyzed, although the H 2 O 2 treatment presented lower mRNA levels compared to control (Figure 5a), the activity levels of this enzyme were increased compared to control in the same condition (Figure 5e). Differences between mRNA and protein levels of catalase have been reported in another study regarding enzymes involved in oxidative stress metabolism (Soares et al, ). Taken together, these data indicate that these extracts have a protective effect against oxidative stress coming from lipids and inorganic sources (such as H 2 O 2 ), modulating intrinsic oxidative defenses in endothelial cells and restoring the oxidative balance.…”

“…The non‐cytotoxic concentration range of ASE in HUVECs was previously described (Soares et al. ), indicating the preservation of cellular metabolic activity at 10 µg ml −1 of ASE.…”

“…In all experiments the concentrations of IS and pCS were 63 µg ml −1 (250 µM) and 40 µg ml −1 (212 µM), respectively, corresponding to the concentrations found in humans in end-stage renal disease (Duranton et al 2012 (Cohen et al 2007). The non-cytotoxic concentration range of ASE in HUVECs was previously described (Soares et al 2017), indicating the preservation of cellular metabolic activity at 10 µg ml −1 of ASE.…”
