Up-regulation of IGF-1 in the frontal cortex of piglets exposed to an environmentally enriched arena

Abstract: Environmental enrichment (EE) is widely used in the life sciences to study effects of environment on the brain. In pigs, despite lack of EE being a key welfare issue there is little understanding of brain effects of EE in pigs. This project aimed to study the effects of exposure to an EE arena on piglet behaviours and on brain gene expression levels with a focus on IGF-1 and related genes. Eight litters of large white × landrace × Hampshire piglets were farrowed and raised in a free farrowing system (PigSAFE).… Show more

“…The observer used a 10 s window to aid in accurate identification of the behaviour occurring at the start of every scan sample. A condensed ethogram based on previous work in enrichment [ 43 ] and play [ 44 ] in pigs ( Table 1 ) was used. All behaviours were recorded as frequencies.…”

“…It increases the quantity of dendritic spines and cell survival molecules by increasing the levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), phospho-Akt and phospho-Mitogen activated protein kinase 1/2 (MAPK1/2), in middle-aged BALB/c mice, hence improving cognitive functions (Ramírez-Rodríguez et al, 2014) . It also significantly increases the expression of IGF-1 gene in the frontal cortex of piglets (Brown et al, 2017).…”
