Unveiling the internal migration dynamics in Ecuador between 2001 and 2010

Abstract: This paper unveils the dynamics of internal migration in Ecuador using data from the last two census. The use of chord diagrams allows one to identify the changing patterns of migration between provinces. In the last period, internal migration decreased notably, and traditional destination provinces lost importance in favour of a more balanced redistribution of people within the country.

“…For example, in the case of Brazil, we chose federal states, which show small migration flows between these areas over the past few years; population mobility has become a short-distance phenomenon, from urban to urban places (Lima & Braga, 2013 ). The same could be said about Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru (Guzmán et al, 2006 ; Pérez-Campuzano et al, 2018 ; Pontarollo & Segovia, 2019 ; Yamada, 2010 ).…”

“…Ecuador had an estimated population of ∼17.5 million people in 2020 and half of the population is concentrated in three out of 24 provinces: the coastal provinces of Guayas and Manabí, and the Pichincha province in the northern Andes (Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos [INEC], 2020). Although seasonal internal migration has historically characterized the rural areas—driven by agricultural and construction employment (Bernard et al., 2017)—there has been a drastic reduction in the last two decades (Pontarollo & Segovia, 2019; Royuela & Ordóñez, 2018).…”
