Unveiling mosquito cryptic species and their reproductive isolation

Abstract: Mosquitoes are major vectors of many infectious pathogens or parasites. Understanding cryptic species and the speciation of disease vectors has important implications for vector management, evolution and hostpathogen and/or host-parasite interactions. Currently, mosquito cryptic species have been reported in many studies, most of which focus on the reproductive isolation of cryptic species and mainly on Anopheles gambiae sensu lato complex. Emerging species within the primary malaria vector Anopheles gambiae s… Show more

“…The species is mainly found in coastal areas [ 60 ]. In disease investigation, a rapid and accurate identification of target species is essential, particularly to detect potential cryptic species which may be involved in disease transmission and ultimately affects the efficacy of control measures [ 61 , 62 ].…”

“…Anopheles mosquitoes are essential vectors in the distribution of the malarial parasite, Plasmodium , hence monitoring mosquito populations is a crucial factor in predicting malaria risk in a geographic region of interest. The number of mosquito species is estimated to be 3500, and they are divided into 41 genera (Zheng, 2020). Anopheles, Aedes, and Culex are three of these 41 genera that are thought to be crucial in the spread of human illness caused by mosquitoes (Adugna et al, 2021).…”

“…Infestation with maternally inherited endosymbiotic bacteria, in particular Wolbachia Hertig, 1936 (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae), is an additional factor, causing a variety of effects on reproductive biology and evolution of their hosts (Stouthamer et al, 1999; Werren et al, 2008). Inducing the cytoplasmic incompatibility, Wolbachia strains may trigger the formation of isolated mitochondrial clades, similar to cryptic species (Brucker & Bordenstein, 2012; Bruzzese et al, 2022), or ensure reproductive isolation among the cryptic species (Dumas et al, 2016; Zheng, 2020), thus acting as an underestimated factor of speciation (Rokas, 2000; Werren, 1997). There is a general agreement that an assessment of endosymbiont infection is needed for understanding the cryptic speciation.…”
