Unusual sauropod tracks in the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition. Cameros Basin (Burgos, Spain)

Abstract: The Las Sereas site includes at least 14 ichnological outcrops along 5.6 km, in the Lara area, southwest Burgos Province. 67 ichnites of dinosaurs are documented at Las Sereas 7, identified as theropod and sauropod trackways occurring in shallow carbonates of lacustrine environment. Sauropod trackways have intermediate-gauge and low heteropody, and show different anatomical features to other tracks found in the ichnological record, especially in the disposition and orientation of pes digits. They are similar t… Show more

“…As a whole, the sequence represents a distal fluvial–alluvial system originating from the southwest. In the last 10 years, an abundant fossil fauna of dinosaurs and other vertebrates has been described in this formation ( Pereda-Suberbiola et al, 2003 ; Torcida Fernández-Baldor, 2006 ; Torcida Fernández-Baldor et al, 2005 , 2008 , 2011 , 2015 ; Pérez-García et al, 2011 ). “…pentadactylus (Kim and Lockley, 2012), Titanopodus mendozensis (Gonz alez Riga and Calvo, 2009), Parabrontopodus mcintoshi (Lockley et al, 1994a), and Breviparopus taghbaloutensis (Belvedere, 2009;Marty et al, 2010). The wide contour of the morphotype E pedal tracks contrasts with the elongated piriform to subtriangular outlines usually occurring in sauropod pedal tracks that show excellent textural preservation and morphological detail (e.g., photographs of pedal impressions in Farlow et al, 1989;Pascual Arribas et al, 2009;Torcida Fern andez-Baldor et al, 2015;Xing et al, 2016c).…”

“…Additionally, the collection includes ornithopod tracks (Fig. 4F) related to the typical ornithopod ichnotaxa Iguanodontipus Díaz-Martínez et al 2015), as well as specimens of stegosaur tracks (Deltapodus), one of them being the only as yet known stegosaur track in the Early Cretaceous of Europe . Other significant tracks are the huge sauropod casts from the tracksite of Las Cuestas I (Pascual-Arribas and Hernández-Medrano 2010), which have preserved clear claw marks in detail, a feature not usually reported in sauropod tracks (Wright 2005).…”
