Unusual Left Ventricular Pseudoaneurysm in a Child After Disseminated Bacterial Infection

Abstract: Left ventricular pseudoaneurysms are rare in children. A six-year-old boy developed left ventricular pseudoaneurysm despite successful control of sepsis. The pseudoaneurysm was diagnosed by two-dimensional echocardiography and detailed by computed tomography. The child underwent successful surgical correction with partial excision and plication of the aneurysmal sac.

“…[ 7 ] However because of their rarity in children, an additional imaging modality such as a computed tomogram or conventional angiography is often resorted to for making a conclusive diagnosis. [ 2 ] In our patient, the clinical setting and the echocardiographic images were reasonably favorable to conclude upon the diagnosis. Magnetic resonance imaging may delineate the aneurysm better and also has potential in differentiating pseudoaneurysm from a true aneurysm.…”

“…[ 7 ] Recent advancements in surgical techniques have ensured a very good outcome in most patients who undergo surgery. [ 2 ] Simple closure of the defect in the myocardium will correct the problem with a very low risk of recurrence. [ 2 ] Further obliteration of the pseudoaneurysmal cavity using additional patches decreases the likelihood further.…”

“…Myocardial infarction is the most common cause of false aneurysms of the left ventricle, followed by cardiac surgery, trauma [6], and infection [7]. Rupture of the free wall of the left ventricle due to myocardial infarction occurs in almost 4% of patients with infarcts and in 23% of those dying to myocardial infarction [4], [5]. Acute pseudoaneurysms, a variant of myocardial rupture, are extremely unstable and bound to fatal rupture.…”
