Unusual jejunal tributaries of the splenic vein and their surgical importance: A case report

Abstract: IntroductionKnowledge of variations regarding the formation, termination and tributaries of the portal vein, superior mesenteric vein and splenic vein are very useful and of utmost importance for surgeons performing surgeries of the pancreas and duodenum. Normally, the jejunal veins are the tributaries of the superior mesenteric vein. We report here, a very unusual case where two proximal jejunal veins drained into the splenic vein instead of the superior mesenteric vein. Case reportDuring the dissection class… Show more

“…Successful venous resection and reconstruction requires intimate knowledge of the portal venous system and its tributaries, especially because the venous system harbors many variations which surgeons should be familiar with. 10 The small intestine, ascending and transverse colon all drain into the superior mesenteric vein via its first order branches, the ileal and jejunal branches. The ileal branch, generally the larger of the two vessels, carries more of the intestinal venous return and usually lies vertically in a cranio-caudal conformation.…”

“…Knowledge of such variations regarding the formation, termination and tributaries of portal vein, IMV, SMV and splenic vein are very useful and important for surgeons performing surgeries on pancreas and duodenum and also for liver surgeries and interventional procedures. It is also helpful for radiologists while performing radiological procedures [7][8][9]. Objective: The study was done with the objective to study the drainage patterns of inferior mesenteric vein and report variations if any.…”
