Unusual effect of cobalt on Cu–MgO catalyst for the synthesis of γ-butyrolactone and aniline via coupling reaction

Abstract: Addition of cobalt to Cu–MgO catalyst elevated the yields of γ-butyrolactone and aniline significantly from 1,4-butanediol and nitrobenzene via hydrogenation and dehydrogenation coupling process.

“…In Mg 2p, Al 2p and Fe 2p regions (Fig. 3a-c [30][31][32] For MgAlFeO(2)-CN, the binding energies in Mg 2p, Al 2p and Fe 2p regions exhibit blue-shis compared with that of MgAlFeO. This electron density change is probably due to the electron transfer from electron-rich g-C 3 N 4 to MgAlFeO.…”

“…Moreover, the spent Cu-SiO2-CP catalyst displays additional peaks at 43.3°, 50.5°, and 74.1°, which correspond to the metallic Cu phase (JCPDS 04-0836) [19]. Notably, the absences of diffraction peaks corresponding to the Cu 0 phase are absent in the Cu-SiO2-AE catalysts, indicating that the Cu nanoparticles in the catalyst are highly dispersed with sizes smaller than 2 nm [20,21]. The pore structure of Cu-SiO2-CP and Cu-SiO2-AE catalysts were characterized by N2 physisorption and the results are presented in Figure 2 and Table 1.…”

“…It was reported that gas-phase hydrogenation NB over Cu/MgO catalysts suffers rapid deactivation. 34 Mohan et al have studied the hydrogenation of NB over Ni/MgO catalysts and it is carefully observed that water adsorption on MgO support enables the brucite-periclase phase transformation. This kind of transformation results in a uniform layer of MgO or Mg(OH) 2 over Ni particles and blocks adsorption of NB molecules on the active sites.…”

“…Similar behavior in the specic activity of Cu catalysts supported on MgO and Mg-Al hydrotalcite was reported previously (Scheme 3). 24,34 In the case of individual NB hydrogenation, there was no auto-condensation of AN or condensation between cyclohexanone and aniline, so high selectivity of AN was obtained. However, a prompt condensation phenomenon was observed between existed products in the coupling reaction.…”
