Unusual degree of angular anisotropy in the resonant Auger spectrum of Kr

Abstract: The angular distribution parameter, /?, has been measured for the resonant Auger spectra in Kr following 3d--Sp excitation. Unusually low values, close to -1, were seen for two bands. From optical spectroscopy data these bands are assigned to the final states 4p 4 ( 3 P)5p( 4 Ps/2, V3/2, and 4 D^/i). According to angular-momentum transfer theory, some of the transitions could be parity unfavored, yielding p values of -1, but additional theory is required for complete understanding. Implications for angular stu… Show more

“…The relative line intensities for the P& initial state from the present work agree well with the angle-integrated experimental intensities [7] for Ar and Kr. For 4d '6p 'P, excited state in Xe, the theory deviates from experiment by 50% in lines lc and 3a [7].…”

“…The energy splittings among the final states agree quite well with optical data [22] while the absolute Auger energies differ from the experimental values [7] by amounts less than 1 eV. These discrepancies are mainly due to the residual errors in the treatment of electron correlation.…”

“…In contrast the ISCI is likely to be fundamentally important for the anisotropy of the Auger decay of Kr 3d3/25@]/23/2 and Xe 4dz&&6pi~2 s~2 resonances. Previous calculations of these Auger spectra which were based on JK coupling model [3] and neglected the ISCI effect failed to reproduce the experimental data of Carlson et al [10,11].…”

“…[76] Recently, however, it has been pointed out that a whole class of states exist which exhibit this phenomenon [77,78] namely, a subset of satellite transitions where one electron is ionized and another is excited. As an example, consider photoionization of the ground state of argon in which one 3p electron is ionized and another is promoted to a 3d state,…”
