Unusual chromosome separation in meiosis of Cuscuta L.

Abstract: This study suggests that precocious division of centromeres and probably inverted meiosis (i.e., the rare occasion in meiosis when the equatorial division precedes the reductional division) occur not only in Cuscuta babylonica Choisy but also in several other dodders, regardless of their chromosome number. It was found in four additional species, all of which belong to subgenus Cuscuta. At least two other species (of subgenus Grammica and subgenus Monogyna) undergo the usual process. Therefore, Cuscuta warrant… Show more

“…Within the flowering plants, holocentric chromosomes are found in Cyperaceae and Juncaceae (Malheiros and de Castro 1947;Håkansson 1958), Cuscuta L. subgen. Cuscuta (Cuscutaceae; Pazy andPlitmann 1991, 1994), Chionographis Maxim. (Melanthiaceae; Tanaka andTanaka 1977, 1980), and Myristica fragrans Houtt.…”

“…Hughes‐Schrader & Schrader, 1961; Sybenga, 1981). The existence of holocentric chromosomes in a Cuscuta species with the lowest chromosome number in the genus ( C. babylonica , 2n = 8, Figs 5–8), as well as in six other species with higher chromosome numbers of the same subgenus (Pazy & Plitmann, 1987, 1991, 1994, 1995; Garcia 2001), may support their early origin. Similar low chromosome numbers also occur in other holocentric species, e.g.…”
