Oligocene and Lower Miocene sediments of the Lučenec Depression were studied to demonstrate the planktonic bioevents and climatic proxies from the Číž Formation (Rupelian) and Lučenec Formation (Chattian-Aquitanian) on the basis of quantitative analyses of foraminifers and calcareous nannofossils. The oldest nannofossil assemblages of the Číž Formation belonged to the NP23 Zone and were dominated by Reticulofenestra ornata known for preference of temperate eutrophic water conditions. An increase in bioproductivity was documented by abundant large-sized planktonic foraminifers (e.g. Turborotalia ampliapertura, Paragloborotalia nana, Subbotina gortanii) and epifaunal to shallow-infaunal benthic species. The middle part of the Číž Formation reveals a lowstand progradation of deltaic sediments of the Rapovce Member. There, the planktonic foraminifers are impoverished in both size and diversity, containing mostly tenuitellid and cassigerinellid species, probably as a result of decreased salinity and increased anoxia in the Tard Clay. Contrary of this, the benthic foraminifers are rich, mainly the infaunal forms of uvigerinid species. They probably proliferated due to a high organic flux from riverine input.

The Mio cene sed i men ta tion his tory of the Brus de nu da tion rel ict (the west ern part of the Carpathian Foredeep, Czech Repub lic) has been in ferred from 20 m of silt/siltstones, sand/sand stones and lime stones pen e trated by the Brus-1 bore hole. De tailed multiproxy lithofacies and biofacies anal y ses have al lowed fa cies and palaeoenvironment in ter pre ta tions. The presence of molluscs, brachi o pods and fish fauna, as well as large ben thic and epiphytic foraminifera in di cates a gen er ally shallow, sub trop i cal, ma rine en vi ron ment. De spite the scar city of biostratigraphical mark ers, the sec tion can be cor re lated with the low er most Badenian (~15-16 Ma). In the siltstones in the lower part of the bore hole, there are abun dant low-sa lin ity foraminifera, which may in di cate in creased rain fall. Linked to this is the nu tri ent en rich ment of the sea bot tom wa ter in ferred from the pres ence of the high-nu tri ent taxa ac com pa nied by abun dant cal car e ous nannoplankton eutrophic taxa such as Coccolithus pelagicus and eutrophic plank tonic foraminifera of the Globigerina bulloides/praebulloides group. The main Planostegina bloom was re corded in a sand stone in the in ter val 12.5-7 m, and was not in flu enced by a shift from high-organic con tent Valvulineria as sem blage of small foraminifera to an epiphytic one. The bound ary be tween siliciclastic and carbon ate sed i men ta tion (-7.5 m) shows a drop in K and Th con cen tra tions, and in the Th/U ra tio, but a rise in the Th/K ra tio. This change in ra dio ac tive el e ment con tent may gen er ally in di cate a sig nif i cant de crease in ter res trial sed i ment in put which is fur ther sup ported by the on set of lime stone de po si tion. Re ver sal of the de po si tion re gime and a de crease of clastic in put into the ba sin may be re lated to the chang ing of the pre cip i ta tion regime, prob a bly trig gered by or bit ally-forced cyclicity.Key words: Mid dle Mio cene, Cen tral Paratethys, siliciclastic sed i men ta tion, car bon ate sed i men ta tion, large ben thic foraminifera, palaeo ec ol ogy.

Abstract:The Machów Formation belongs to a supra-evaporitic succession of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep Basin (PCFB). Our studies were concentrated in the eastern part of the PCFB, north of Rzeszów. 33 samples were collected from five boreholes, at depth intervals as follows: Stobierna 2 -1016-1338 m; Stobierna 3 -715-1669 m; Stobierna 4 -1016-1238 m; Stadnicka Brzóza 1 -350-356 m and 1043-1667 m; Pogwizdów 2 -1161-1390 m. The obtained biostratigraphical data gave evidence for the upper part of the NN6 (the Early Sarmatian) and for the NN7 (the lowermost part of the Late Sarmatian) Zones. All the nannofossil assemblages from Stobierna 2, Stobierna 4 and Pogwizdów 2 were assigned to the NN6 Zone. In the Stobierna 3 borehole the interval 1669-1113 m was assigned to NN6, whereas assemblages from depth interval 843-715 m belong to NN7 Zone. In Stadnicka Brzóza 1 interval 1667-1043 m belongs to NN6 Zone and interval 350-356 m to NN7 Zone. The Discoaster exilis Zone (NN6) was defined by the presence of Reticulofenestra pseudoumbilica, Sphenolithus abies, Helicosphaera walbersdorfensis and absence of Discoaster kugleri. The Discoaster kugleri Zone (NN7) assignment was based on the abundance of Coccolithus miopelagicus ( > 10 µm), used as an alternative species essentially confined to that interval, and absence of Catinaster coalithus. The observed nannoplankton assemblages are predominantly composed of a high number of redeposited material, abundant longranging taxa and taxa resistant to carbonate dissolution. General assemblage compositions, obtained from quantitative data, indicate shallow near-shore environment and could confirm basin isolation.
