L;trninariales) in British Colun~bia. Canada. Can. J. Bot. 56: 1198-1205. Egregia rilerlzie.sii (Turner) Areschoug is acommon component of the algal flora along the west coast of Vancouver Island. Queen Charlotte Strait, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca but is absent from the Strait ofGeorgia in British Columbia, Canada. This clistribution pattern was found to be correlated with tempelxture and salinity in that E. ri~c.rlziesii is not present in areas where there are seasonal periods of low salinity and high tempelxture. To test this correlation, field transplants of sporophytes and I:tbol-atory experiments with sporophytes and culture work were carried out. The results suggest that the clistribution of E. ~trorl;i~sii is liniited by specific combinations of salinity and temperature; it requires high salinities and tempelxtures less than 15°C for its survival.

In order to estimate the nucleotide diversity of the four kelp species Laminaria digitata, L. hyperborea, L. saccharina and L. faeroensis, three approaches were used. First we sequenced 1320 base pairs (bp) of nuclear-encoded large subunit (LSU) rDNA, which included some of the most variable domains. These sequences discriminated between L. digitata, L. hyperborea and L. saccharina, but L. faeroensis was identical to L. saccharina. A phylogeny inferred based on 672 bp of the nuclearencoded non-coding internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS1 and ITS2) rDNA, which are more variable than LSU rDNA, likewise failed to resolve a monophyletic L. saccharina with respect to L. faeroensis. Thirdly, we tested the usefulness of the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) technique to provide a resolved phylogeny for 43 Laminaria specimens. Laminaria digitata and L. hyperborea were resolved as strongly supported monophyletic groups. A third robust clade consisted of L. saccharina plus L. faeroensis. Within this clade, L. faeroensis samples were grouped with bootstrap support of 80%, but the L. saccharina clade was less well supported. The AFLP data in combination with rDNA sequences indicated subspecies status for L. faeroensis. AFLP analyses of different morphotypes of L. digitata and L. saccharina from Danish coastal waters did not reveal any differences. However, L. digitata from the Faroe Islands was genetically distinct from other samples.

Helgoland and the history of research on marine benthic algae. Early phycological research on the island of Helgoland was performed by amateur phycologists from the adjacent coastal regions of Germany (Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein). These pioneers were followed by professionals, and by collectors from the mainland universities, particularly from Berlin. This second phase group includes the naturalist Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg, the zoologists Johannes Mfiller, Ernst Haeckel and Anton Dohrn, and the botanists Alexander Braun, Nathanael Pringsheim, and Ferdinand Cohn.
